What is it?

I ordered a new Accumulator (with return hose attached to it already) from Autozone.  When I picked it up today, I noticed it doesn't have that little canister (like my old return hose has) in the hose right by where the hose attaches to the compressor.

What is that canister and do I need it to run R12 in my system?  Thanks for any help.

Ok.  You can throw rocks at me.  I got home, took a look and saw that the canister I thought was on the return hose, is actually on the pressure line next to the compressor.

I'll go stand in the corner now and put my dunce cap on.  :(

Problem solved.

For the record, that canister is actually a ler to absorb compressor pulses...

I don't know if the ler is why a new discharge line is so expensive, but when I priced a new one today, Asvanced and Autozone wanted $80 for them!  Wow!

They want so much for that line because its so out of date. Not many people asking for those to much. Then if you are talking about the metal in the A/c system that mounts on the fire wall? That is not a ler. It is a drier to remove the moisture in the gases flowing inside those ac hoses. Seems compressors don't compress liquid to well.

He's talking about his discharge line. They don't put receiver dryers in discharge lines ;) And the R/D's primary function (in addition to absorbing water moisture with a dessicant) is to allow any refrigerant that may not have boiled off in the evapourator to do so before going to the compressor because, as you say, compressors don't do liquids.
