Lower Degree Temp Fan Switch

Hey there. Okay, I've searched and searched for this subject and I don't believe I found exactly what I'm looking for. I will need your insight and experiences please.

I'm suffering from cooling fan issues with the '86 Turbo. I traced it down to most likely the fan switch. My problem is that I just recently replaced that switch because I thought the old one was bad. Turned out there was some debris in the water jacket that kept the switch from heating up enough. I replaced the switch and cleaned the debris, and the fan started to work, although it would get way up to three-quarters at least before it came on--seems way too high for me. So now, I have a brand new engine and the fan won't come on again! I replaced the fan control relay, and now if I jump the plug at the switch, the fan comes on, and it also comes on with the air.

So, my first thought is to replace the switch once again, but with one set at a lower temperature. Where can I get one? It doesn't appear as if I can just go to Auto Zone and ask for one, they barely know what I'm talking about half the time and this would blow their minds I fear. Still, even if I get the lower temp switch, what are the chances of it working correctly in the stock location?

My second thought is to replace the whole electric fan and switch system. I got a Volvo FMIC and I know I'll have to go with the Ranger Radiator, figured I might as well just go with another type of fan and switch that's more effective. If I do go that route, where would I put the switch? I don't think the stock location would be very wise. What have any of you done? I'd like to see.

Thanks!

If you do some digging, you can usually find an aftermarket fan switch.

Before I switched over to having the MegaSquirt control the fan on the Tbird, I hunted down a 200* switch (on 200*- off 180*).  I know Painless repackages the same one I used, and I know I've hunted some down before just Googling around.

The stock fan temp is 235* and those stupid controllers fail all the time (usually sitting in traffic on a 90*+ day).  Now I only use a relay.

I'm running the 200* switch in the Volvo to control the e-fan I swapped in, and it works just fine.

Build up is common on the 2.3Ts in that intake passage, esp in cars that were not well maintained.

As far as a location for the new switch goes, you can find aftermarket pieces you can put in a radiator hose, and mount the fan switch there, of fab something similar up.

Great! Hey thanks for the info Chuck! I think for now, I might clean the passage in the intake, then try the temp switch from Painless wiring...but run a new setup when I get the Ranger radiator in...

The Painless switch is a single-post unit.  It grounds through the engine-to-chassis grounds.  Your stock one might be a 2-post unit.  You'll need to figure out which side goes to the controller and which side is the ground.  The side to the controller will go to the switch.  You'll need to make sure your engine-to-chassis grounds are up to snuff.
