no insurance! ...Guess who got hit?!?!?!

So, I'm getting ready to buy a new DD. I called up my insurance company 2 days ago to find out what it would cost me to add it to my policy, only to find out that it was CANCELED!!! Apparently I've been driving around with no insurance since May 11th!!!

Apparently, my policy was up for renewal on that date. They sent me a proof of insurance, and a new policy agreement for the new term. The policy, of course, renews automatically if you pay the first month's bill on time. However, I've been all screwed up lately and couldn't pay it on time, and wound up making the payment on the 21st, which was apparently too late, and so it did not renew itself.

No one ever called me, I never recieved any emails, and I thought I never recieved any letters. My money was never refunded (to my knowledge at the time), so I had no indication that I was driving around totally illegally!

So finally, I started searching around my unopened mail, and dug into what appeared to be my next months bill. What I found instead was a notice of cancellation, and a refund in the form of a check for $164.

Well, as a result, I decided to get a couple new quotes from some different companies. two years ago when I was buying insurance for the first time, I checked over 8 different companies, and every single one wanted at least $1200 for a basic package coverage for 6 months on one car(the coug) and one driver(me). I wound up going with allstate.

Last year they lowered it to just over $960. When I got a quote yesterday from GEICO, I added a driver(my wife), and a car(the new tbird), and it DROPPED to $550!!!! That's over $400 less, with more insurance.

I am dumbfounded. I guess the gecko's the way to go. For me at least.

marriage, multiple vehicles, and being over 25 will all help to lower the premiums. Are you 25 or older? Is your wife?

I'm 21, she'll be 23 next month, and I've got 5 tickets on my record from when I was younger. She's got 1.

1.Failure to yield right of way. Forgot to look left out of a stop sign. Lesson learned.
2.Speeding. 41 in a 35. Didn't realize how fast I was going. He did.
3.Speeding. 44 in a 35. Thought the speed limit was 45. It wasn't.
4.Speeding. 61 in a 50. Getting passed on both sides in the middle of a 7 lane highway and being tailgated. Guess I was going too slow.
5.Careless driving. Fell asleep and rolled my truck into a lake at 65mph. That was interesting.
6.Headlights off at night. I had foglights on but those don't count.

7.Careless driving. Driving drowsy and didn't quite stop in the rain on time. Hers.

For the last 3 years, I now spend more time watching my speedo than the road. I do not speed. At all. Ever. I'm terrified of cops, only when I'm in my car.

I can't wait till those tickets fall off and we turn 25. I just wanna stop gettting older right then and there!

Dayum, FIVE tickets???

I had one back in, uhhhh, oh yeah '01 & one prior in I think '94(both speeding)... A little trip to the speedo calibration shop and I got both reduced to improper equip, so never had any points... Paid the fines which is what they really want anyway...

Yeah, I've had LOTS of bad luck around here. I have nicknamed my city's police department BHP (Belleview Highway Patrol) because they have literally, nothing better to do, than sit on the side of the road and write tickets. Course, plenty of those are from county sherrifs too

I've had a couple since I was 16, non of them stuck by the time I was 21 and I'm getting a safe drivers discount, until I renew my policy and my wreck gets on there. Right now I am paying about $60 a month on the bird with me and my wife. I'm 23 and she's 21. I am also going through geico. As far as your tickets go, sometimes they will drop before the 5 year limit. I never fill out the citation part of the quote and then see what they come up with. If they can't see it, it does not exist unless you tell them otherwise. I found out that my insurance went up for a ticket I never received because I accidentally put the wrong date, so they got me for two.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Well at least it worked out for the better in the end!

I've only gotten 3 tickets 1 speeding in CT, and 2 for seatbelts. The first seatbelt ticket I'd had an allergic reaction to something, was covered in hives and just basically refused to put it on for comforts sake. The second I was wearing my seatbelt from the second I left my house and the cop was being a dick since I was driving a loud red crx (bird wouldn't start and had to be at work, just needed a new rotor in the distributor).

Warnings on the other hand, let's just say it's probably good I'm a girl...

I pay about $150/month for 2 birds and the chero with progressive

daaaamn. its ridiculous how much higher it is for young people. My boss at work is 40 and he says he's got full coverage on 3 vehicles with 3 drivers, and he pays less in a year than I do in 6 mos.

I just checked out some quotes from other companies than the one I'm with ...

Right now, with USAA, I pay:
319$/6 months for the '97 t-bird
299$/6 months for the wife's '01 Jetta
148$/6 months for the '89 C-1500

For a grand total of 766$ for 6 months of coverage between the three. I'm 33 and I've got one speeding ticket. The wife is 21 (plus a few ;-) ) and has 1 at-fault and 1 not-at-fault accident.

Progressive wanted 849$ for a 6 month policy & Geico wanted 1,054$ for 6 months to cover the same vehicles with the same levels of coverage.

I haven't had a speeding ticket since I was 19. Got both of them back-to-back in a red car in the back of the pack. Since then, I refuse to buy another red car and I don't speed unless I've got someone behind me to take the fall (which has happened on numerous occassions).

We pay about $165/month for full coverage with the WRX and my wife's 2003 Vue through Progressive. We are both young 30-somethings with no tickets in 10 years.

Although in my mid-20s I was paying Progressive about $70/month for basic liability on the Bird.

I'm with Nationwide and pay about $3,500 a year.  But this is because there are four on the policy (two are 17) and I have about 8 cars insured and two motorcycles.  I never could understand why it cost more to insure more cars, I only can drive one at a time.  You would think the driver would be insured and he could drive any car he is in at the time?

I had about 10 tickets in my late teens, mostly for street racing.  I bet I had 25 other warnings without tickets.  Back in the late 70's they did not care as much as they do now.  I'm scared to death to drive too fast now, the cops are mean nowadays and everyone needs money.

My last ticket was about 3 years ago.  I was driving the mini-van on the freeway with the cruised control set to 72 in a 70 zone.  I went by the cop and did not even slow down but he pulled me over.  Turned out the speed limit went down to 60 about a 1/2 mile back and I completely missed the sign.  He he not take pity on me and gave me a ticket.  This was the first ticket in about 10 years.n  I swear they change the speed limit with the sole purpose of giving out tickets.

I absolutely believe that sometimes. Its ridiculous sometimes the way you have to CONSTANTLY keep an eye out for speed limit signs, and on your speedo. I know the speed limit on every section of road in any part of my town by heart, so if they change it, I know.
