re-threading a new hole?

Someone told me I could do this, im wondering if anyone here has tried it. How does this work? Im trying to re-thread a hole where one of the valve cover bolts screw into. it's stripped inside. any ideas, thanks.

sounds like you got the bolt out...

you need a tap and die set. use the tap. you dont realy need a whole set. you can buy just the one you need at some auto parts stores and most hardware stores. sears has a nice little set or taps. you may be able to retap to the original thread. if its too stripped you will have to go to the next size up. you might have to get a drill bit as well.

yea, it pretty stripped:( so does that mean I need to get the next size drill bit, drill into it and use the tap? thanks for the info

There is also a product called "hellicoil" that will also work. Do a google search and you will find alot of online retailers, also, your local napa will probably have a variety of sizes available.

yeah, helicoils are super easy to do. But you have to get the EXACT size drill bit they say to use. If you try to tap out a hole that has been damaged severely, then all you will do is remove more threads and weaken the hole. Id say go for it! (helicoils I mean)
