First Place! Reply #4 – March 09, 2010, 09:43:47 PM He was at the regional competition and he did something for auto body, but I'm not sure exactly what it was today. I will find out and let you know.He is already accepted at Ohio Technical College in Cleveland, however, he is now looking at WYO Tech near Pittsburgh. He plans to take Classic Car Restoration if he goes to Ohio...and Street Rod & Custom fabrication, Motorsports Chassis Fabrication and Trim & Upholstery Technology if he goes to WYO.Ohio will take him almost 2 years to finish his courses, while WYO will only take about a year and has more of the course he actually wants to take. Ohio doesn't offer the fabrication he wants. Quote Selected

Reply #7 – March 10, 2010, 01:24:47 AM I know your proud,, i would be to and send my congrads as well.However,, like i warn my boys especially my oldest, it sounds like a career that has very low demand especially in most any economy. Ohio is full of restoration / hobby shops that are shut down, same goes for a lot across the US. Just playing devils advocate, thats all.Take Havi for instance,, he has a degree in auto body and best case would be 25/hr. As sad as the truth might be, 25/hr doesnt get you into a new home, two car payments, insurance, food, bills and the like with much to set aside for emergencies.However,, under a combined income, he makes 25/hr and the future spouse makes x / hour, then its a different story. Combined incomes have become the norm over the past decade and one income obviously is'nt enough.I keep telling mason that he isnt the only one who can pick at an ax and play tunes,, he wants to get into the music industry on the sound design side. I have no clue what all that is about, but it sounds like a job that isnt everywhere and its probaby standing room only. Yes, i know ,, another tanget and babble. Quote Selected

First Place! Reply #9 – March 10, 2010, 10:49:13 AM Thanks for raining on the parade... I appreciate that. :rolleyes:Anywho... Hunter's part of the competition was to play Auto Body Tech Assistant. He had to get paint codes, parts lists and do prep work... he went above and beyond what was required so they could see what he can really do... he really impressed them with that.His teacher is one of the best in the state.He won't even let them go to one of the competitions because the people who run it decided that since his kids took first place every year, they had to give the other kids an edge, so they cheat and send copies of the requirements and any questions that will be asked, to the other school... but not our school. Our kids do so well they don't need to cheat. So this teacher said he refuses to let the kids go to that one because of the cheating, even when he knows our kids will win.As for Hunter's career choice, there is no guarantee that any career choice will win you gainful employment. It's a chance that everyone takes when they choose what they are going to do... look how many people have gone to college and now can't find jobs in their chosen career path. It also depends on where you choose to live. There are many places that he will be able to make a good living doing what he is going into.... no one said he was going to live around where we are.... much as I'd like him to.... he is willing to move to where the money is. He is very good at this and will be able to make a good living at it.Daddybair, this is from Skills USA. First Place! Reply #10 – March 10, 2010, 11:22:57 AM That's awesome. Congrats to Hunter! Sounds like he's very passionate, and if he keeps up that passion he WILL become successful at it for sure! Cassity's logic only applies to average people doing the average job. If Hunter's already going above and beyond, all he has to do is keep that up, and he will definitely stand out from the rest. Once he stands out and people prefer to take their cars to Hunter then he'll have the competitive edge.It's not what you do that defines how much you make, it's how you do it! It is the same thing they changed the name after i graduated high school. The national compition is very competive, and for the kids who are in a trade like ur son its him against i think 53 or 54 others, and if they still do it the same way they just name the first place winner and tell the other to just say they placed in the top 10 or 54 somthing like that. I hope he gets first cause i know a freind who placed first at nationals and he got tools and other prizes valued around $25,000 plus a full ride to collage for his trade, not to mention job offers out the wazoo. Reply #14 – March 11, 2010, 03:32:30 AM wow i found out i was going to be a dad in my senior year i was 19 my wife 17.just remember its been since 1997 for me and times have change but if he has the choice between tools or scholarship.he needs to check into weather or not he needs to have his own tools at the start of the job if so 25k isn't as bad as a loan compared to say what mine was 80k for just a little over a year.and if he dont need the tools than its a no brainer. i know how it is trying to go to school full time plus work full time leaves little time for family but if he can make it through it then his famliy will be better off. sacraficeing one thing to get anouther is something we all do but hes young and his work drive will get him far just keep him focused:beatyoass: lol Quote Selected
