Temp guage dead and car runs bad/rich

Hello,

I have an 87 V6 Bird w/digital dash, the temp is inop,it runs rough and rich, thought it may be a temp sensor???  Tried a new one along w/a tested T-stat still no change.

I'm not an electronics guru,I understand the basic of the system, any help would help.

Thanks :o)

Not trying to thread hijack , but I have this problem on a full digi cluster , all the other gauges work but not the temp .
I already tried a new sender
I know on the older style senders if you grounded them the gauge should peg out. How do you test the digital gauge ?

Hey,

I'm sorry,I forgot to mention that my cluster has only digital speed-O,I only used a test light at both temp sending unit  and temp sensor to see if there was any juice and there wuz.

Thanks!

You can take the single red wire on the front of the lower intake (forget what it's called) and ground it out. Turn the key to the on position, and see if the gauge pegs. This will tell you that your temp gauge is still good. If the gauge dosen't move, your next move should be to see if you are getting voltage to the IVR or to the gauge itself.  Also, pull your cluster out and check all the bulbs, believe it or not, if some of those bulbs are burnt out, they will stop the electrical path and not allow voltage to the other parts if the cluster. I had a similar problem with mine, both water temp and gas gauge weren't working (among other things). Check this thread out, http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?t=26898

Thank you 20th,

My only other question is why duz it seem like the car is running rich and rough?

It just feels/sounds like something besides the guage is not right? If the temp sensor was bad seems the computer would think the engine is cold? I need to look and see if I have a shop manual for this car? I just have a funny feeling about all of this.

Thank you

The gauge sender and the EEC sensor are two different things , completely independent of each other.

I got mine to work ....WHOOOO HOOOOOOO!!!!!!
I sat down with the evtm and went from the sender to the cluster until I found the problem.
It was the printed circuit at the back of the cluster a drop of super glue and some rear defroster grid repair paint and I'm in business :D

Hey,

It's working now, replaced both temp sensor and sending unit, must have gotten bad sensor from Motorcraft? Tried another and it works and runs fine

Tach/Multi guage diagnostic

all codes are Hexadecimal format and can range from 00 to FF (binary 0000 to 11111111)or (decimal 0 - 128)  . While active in the various modes, they can be used as a "wiggle test" to check for shorts and intermittant circuits. Anyway,, display will be in hex format.

hold the guages button in and turn the ign key to RUN
Advance through the tests by pressing the guages button.
A steady Tone and 8 bars lit is a passing test
No tone with 24 bars lit is a fail

To enter the Fuel computer self test
Press and hold the Select button atleast 5 or so seconds until the test display appears then advance thru the tests by pressing on Select over again.
