Fox T-Bird/Cougar prices

In light of threads asking what a fox car is worth and if someone got ripped off on the car they bought, I got an idea. Why don't we help those who question the sale value of these cars by posting what we got ours for. Just copy the following and insert your information.

Year of car/ Model
Year purchased/ Mileage / Purchase price
Cars Condition Interior/Exterior
Factory options
Any modifications
Need any work to be tagged

Just remember that this information is for the condition of the car when you bought it. Not what you have done to it. Sale prices of these cars haven't changed much over past few years so it may give a semi-accurate account of what most of the fox bodied birds and cougars sell for.

1987 Thunderbird Base-3.8L
-purchased in june 2001, 174K, 500 bucks
-car was clean, paint was a little rough, very little rust, interior had minor stains, cracked dash, average condition
-most of the average options, had the lighting group, single power seat, power everything else
-aftermarket pop-top sunroof
-car was inspection ready at the time, after sitting for a few years, it needed some other work

1987 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe
-purchased november 2004, 108K, 500 bucks
-rough, clearcoat peel, flaking paint, nasty scratch in fender, molding was faded, interior was decent, one tear in the leather, slightly faded, dash cracked, windows dont work properly yet, yellowed lights, cracked corner light
-options...all buck power moon roof, automatic temp control, and keyless entry
-mods...well...the car has had a "colorful" history, owner blew up 2 engines, and it currently has an 86 engine using the 87 turbo and manifold
-inspection...heh...i had a connection...but it needed exhaust, power steering fixed, e-brake fixed, tires, and a bunch of odds and ends
-car also doesnt have working a/c and has a blown heater core
It's Gumby's fault.

"Options" put in quotes because I'm not 100% sure what was standard equipment on these three yet.. so I just tried to list it like a used car dealer might list it.

#1: 1986 T-bird (base model) CFI 3.8 V6 w/ AOD (column shift) and 7.5"/3.27 rear.
Purchased June '04, credited @ $700 in a complicated trade, had approx. 167k miles.
Interior: Only one or two rips in seats.. interior mainly needed cleaning from prev. owner being a smoker. Carpet in excellent condition. No cracks in dash. Steering wheel was trashed and needed covering. Headliner nearly perfect, except for smoker-related stains.
Exterior: Paint (regatta blue) mostly in good shape, and mainly needed touch-up work.. bottoms of both doors rusted, lots of spot rust.
"Options": PS, PB, PDL, PW, manual A/C, power driver seat, power trunk & fuel door release, premium sound.
No modifications done by previous owner.
Repairs needed as of purchase: Rattle in front suspension, doors need replacement due to rust. A/C needed recharge, has slow leak. (over several months) Nothing to stop it from being tagged immediately.

#2: 1988 T-bird (LX) SEFI 5.0 V8 w/ AOD (column shift) and 7.5"/2.73 open rear.
Purchased October '04, paid $130, had approx. 168k miles. Car was intended as parts car originally, but no longer.
Interior: Leather on front seats destroyed, had to be cut out with a utility knife and covered w/ cheap seat covers. Leather on top of back seat beginning to fall apart. Bottom of back seat is cracked but intact for now. Carpet in very good condition, but had extensive dark stains. (probably coffee and/or cola) Top of dash cracked extensively. More than half the instrument cluster bulbs were dead. Headliner beginning to disintegrate, sun shade fabric extensively damaged, rear view mirror not mounted to windshield.
Exterior: Paint (dark blue) has lost clearcoat on roughly half the car, and will need re-painting. Body has almost no rust beyond a thin surface coating on the underbody and two small spots where the paint was compromised down to bare metal. (one on hood, one on right front quarter panel) Minor damage at junction between driver's door and left front quarter panel. Se at bottom of right front quarter panel. (the second rust spot)
"Options": PS, PB, PDL, PW, A/C w/ ATC, headlight auto-dim, full digital cluster, dual power seats w/ power recline, rear reading lamps, courtesy lamps on doors, keyless entry keypad, premium sound, (rear speakers and amp removed, head unit replaced w/ Alpine cassette player) power fuel door and trunk release. (trunk release not functional)
No other modifications done by previous owner, except listed above.
Repairs needed as of purchase: Engine largely non-functional at purchase.. believed to be a combination of several issues. (close to being resolved as of this post) Left power window needs clips replaced. Interior needed extensive cleanup. A/C not functional, may just need recharge/minor maintenance. (not diagnosed yet) Still not tagged.

Extra credit/#3: 1988 Lincoln Mark VII (LSC) SEFI 5.0 V8 HO w/ AOD (console shift) and 8.8"/3.27 open rear.
Purchased April '05, paying $800. (purchase in progress) Has approx. 116k miles.
Interior: Front seat leather mostly (above 95%) intact. Bottom of rear seat destroyed. Top of rear seat damaged but usable. Headliner removed, sun shades need new fabric. Carpet in good to very good condition, but needs cleaning. Some courtesy lights damaged. Dash needs work, including replacement of trim panel and securing of the fuse panel. Dash extensively cracked on top, but covered with fitted carpet matching interior color. Both door panels were mostly separated from their doors.
Exterior: Paint (sandstone/sandalwood metallic) severely faded, will need new paint. A few small spots of paint damage. Only one or two cases of spot-rust found so far. Minor dents in rear chrome bumper.
"Options": PS, PB w/ ABS, PDL, PW, A/C w/ ATC, air suspension, headlight auto-dim, buttstuffog cluster, dual power leather seats w/ power recline/lumbar/bolster, numerous courtesy lamps, keyless entry keypad, trip computer. (might be forgetting a few here)
Modifications unknown at present.
Repairs needed as of purchase: Relay for air suspension, new ignition switch, new bottom half of back seat, new exhaust in rear half of car. Others might be needed, still in process of examining car. Not tagged.

Is that enough info for you? :p

I would, but I payed WAY too much for mine, and that would be useless to a first time buyer.

Since I get my Birdies from auction, the price isn't going to be what the general public will be paying for these cars. So I'm not going to list the details, just going to say I've only paid $1335 total for the last five '87-'88 Turbo Coupes I've bought(also got a '87 5.0 LX back in '00 for a paltery $90, swapped it for a paint job on the daughters TC).

Now this brings us to the Tbird I just bought from a private sale. While this is far from the average sale, it does show what can be found...

Year of car/ Model... 1988 T bird Base...
Year purchased....March 2005
Mileage... Not sure, approx 135K(makes no difference, see mods)
Purchase price... $1700

Cars Condition Interior... Fair. Dash badly cracked, carpet stained, missing front seats and consolette(has new single racing seat), rear seat good cond (I have a full set of Turbo Coupe seats to go in it) .

Condition Exterior... Paint poor, badly peeling clear coat, but has straight body with ZERO rust...

Factory options...  Working A/C, power windows, mirrors and locks.

Any modifications(this is where it gets good)...

Engine..  Has FRESH 308 with Windsor Jr heads, Crane roller rockers, BBK 65mm Throttlebody and fender well cold air, MSD A6L iginition, Ford racing Mass Air conversion with 19lb injetors. New dist, water pump, P/S pump, alt, etc.. Cam is said to be stock HO(It idles a lot smoother than the Trick Flow cam in the 5.0 TC). Cut open and ported HO intake, underdrive pulleys.

Exaust... 1 5/8" BBK shorties with 2 1/2" off road H pipe and Summit Racing cat back system...

Transmission ... Fresh AOD built with Red Eagle clutches, Trans Go shift kit, with modified 1, 2, D/OD shift pattern, shifts HARD, "Police" torque converter(supposed slightly higher stall than stock), LSC shifter(gotta do somethin about that)..

Suspension/Wheels...Rear end, 3.73(suspect it may be a 3.55) Turbo Coupe with disc brakes. Front brakes, Turbo Coupe 11", Ford Racing lowering srings(they gotta go). Wheels... 15" Cougar turbines, with new Futura white letter tires...

Misc... Sport buttstuffog cluster with tach(installed).

Goodies in the trunk...Sony 10 disc CD, Black Magic electric fan, Speed Densety HO EEC, and manual seat tracks...

Approx $7000 in receipts in glove box...

Need any work to be tagged.... needs fan shroud, and will inst the TC seats, also ditch the lowering springs...

Year of car/ Model...1988 thunderbird sport

Year purchased/ Mileage / Purchase price...about a year and a half to 2 years ago, about 98k miles, 100 bucks (trade in. my uncle is the general manager at a small used car dealership chain out this way. ive never had to pay more than wholesale for a car. he still managed to make $100 off of me for the tbird though....A.C.V.ed it for $1. he still tells me what a piece of sh@ he thinks it is every time i see him and asks me why i would want it....lol. i also got my mustang parts car and 87 turbo coupe parts car from him. another 100 bucks:) each.

Cars Condition Interior/Exterior...interior was decent. not mint but not abused. drivers seat is worn from use but not worn through or torn. the power windows were both off the brackets. radio display was out (factory premiem sound), small leak out of the emissions tube, dash badly cracked from what i can only guess was caused by the original owner slambing the piss out of it cause the gagues were acting wacky (turned out to be a voltage regulator, an easy fix).

Factory options...loaded with power moonroof and all other options including 10" drums

Any modifications...nope, totaly untouched, original and un-molested one owner car. untill i got ahold of it anyways...

Need any work to be tagged...just the emissions tube.

1986 GS Cougar Base 3.8L

Aug1999 $1700 103,000 miles

Interior was good.  Drivers seat was a little worn, still to this day has a perfect dash (knock on wood).  Front carpet stained b/c i never had floormats.  Some rust on the front fenders but was half assed fixed.  STill has 2 of the original tires.  Same paint starting to fade.

No Modifications

Nothing needed to get on road

1988 Cougar 3.8L Base

November 2003 $40 111,000

Interior dirty from sitting for a few years but otherwise unworn and in great shape for age.  Dash cracked.  No rust, no leaks in engine.  Bad tires and only minor dents.

No modifications but came with premium sound.  Radio non working and amp button broken.

Needed tittle and still needs tires, breaks, motor mounts, steering column (from breaking it b/c we had no keys), Door locks, tumbler and trunk lock, and transmission linkage and other tranny work.  Most of that is from not having keys and we broke the shiznit out of everything.

1987 or 88 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe

April 2005 Free(labor trade on some computer work. Wanted $100 for it)

Interior has usual wear.  Dirty from sitting in trees.  Major rust around fender wells and startings of major rust on the bottoms of doors.  Fenders, hood and nose piece perfect.  All snoflakes present with centercaps.  Almost bad tires.

No modifications.

Needs a timing belt and then may run.  That is what my mechanic told me and he is who i got it from.  Other than that it is not in my possesion yet.

Other cars that my buddy has:
1988 T-bird 3.8l.  $100 bucks.  Ran fine but blew a bearing a few weeks later.  Was in all around good shape.

1985 TC -- 1000 dollars.  Cracked the head a few weeks later under hard driving

1986 T-bird -- Free from his girlfriend.  Parked due to a tranny shaft seal leak.

1987 TC -- purchased from junkyard for 200 bucks.  Had 2 snowflakes, engine and tranny and all interior.  Rear ended and used for parts only

1987 TC -- 200 bucks.  Purchased wrecked in the front and with no transmission and a blown head gasket.  Used parts from the other 87 and tranny from 85 and fenders from 88.  Now being driven daily.

1985 Cougar -- free from a friend who purchased for 50 bucks.  Parted and destroyed.
1986 Mercury Cougar -- Midnight Wine and Taupe  ($1700) in 1999 w/ 103,000 miles.  Now with a motor from an 87 with 54K on it.
1988 Mercury Cougar -- Light Sandlewood Metalic  ($40)  in 2003 with 111,000 miles.  Needs a fender, some welding and a good tune up.  Possibly my next daily if i ever get it to the shop.
