oil pan removal

is it possible to remove the oil pan from a 5.0 in our cars while the engine is in the car? I'm asking because I was in a hurry to get the engine in because I only had the hoist for the day and now I need to pull the pan to install some parts.  anyone done this?

I thinks it's possible if the exhaust is unbolted,and you can lift the engine enough from the bottom then wedge something sturdy under the motor mounts to support it while you remove the pan.It's probably easier to just lift the engine though.Is there someone around that can loan or rent you a hoist?They rent them around here for $25.00 a day.My friend and I bought one together.Good investment.

not sure on the rental.  there is no exhaust installed yet so there are no worries there.  the engine is basically sitting in the car not really bolted in yet.  I was thinking that I could place the jack under the transmission bell and lift the engine enough but I wanted to make sure that there would be enough room to wiggle the pan out.

You can't support it by the tranny,because you'll have to pull the pan out towards the rear of the engine.If you can unbolt the tranny from the cross  member,and lower one side of the tranny crossmember,it may let you lift the engine higher while the tranny drops down to allow the engine to raise higher.No hoses are hooked up are there.If not,that'll help too.Getting the gasket (use a one piece) will be a little tricky.Mine came with cool little gasket retainers to hold the gasket to the block.

I've changed oil pumps like this-what a pain in the ass!! The pan wont come out because of the oil pump in the front sump. Why do you need to remove the pan? Easier to wait until you can pull the motor back out.

I need to pull the pan to install the pick up tube and an oil pump drive.  this is the engine I had in my 79 cougar and thought I bombshelled come to find out I flattened the cam.  by lifting the engine from the tranny I can get the pan down far enough that I can do what I need shouldnt be too hard of a task to do with the pan sitting on the crossmember I wouldnt think.  I have worked in tighter situations before. Vinnie, what gasket did you use?

Rubber with steel core 1 piece oil pan gasket.  I love this thing. Ive used it in quite a few 5.0's ive done for people

its a pain in the butt getting the gasket around the pump-but I've finished the job in an afternoon.

Sure. put the car on a lift, support the motor under the balancer, and drop the k-member. :)

Just wait until you can lift the engine.It's the quickest and easiest way.

On a 5.0 Bird it's one of thos projects that once you've done one, you'll never try another... In fact I bailed in the middle and pulled the engine after I got the pan off...

I did a 4cyl Stang and it was a piece of cake...

I dont think it will be all that bad....  does anyone know the thread specs for the nut that holds the pickup tube to the main bolt?
