302 block numbers Reply #2 – December 28, 2009, 06:04:24 PM E7 id's the casting as a '87, the "T" is truck application which is a bit surprising, but I had a '85 truck block that was cast for roller lifters just not machined... "E" is engine, no surprise there... All about Ford casting numbers...http://www.mustangtek.com/FordDecode.html Quote Selected

302 block numbers Reply #5 – December 28, 2009, 06:13:49 PM If it had the E6 heads, you can bet it was likely the original engine... Those use 3/4" reach spark plugs whereas all the Stangs(other than '86) use 1/2" reach plugs... A '86 engine would likely have a E6 or earlier casting #... Possibly if it were a late engine it may have a '87 casting...The machined area behind the intake should have eight digits... Two will be letters that are the year and assembly plant of the vehicle, followed by six numbers that are the consecutive unit number of the vehicle(last six digits of VIN)... Quote Selected
302 block numbers Reply #6 – December 28, 2009, 07:57:33 PM I'll be investigating all that tomorrow. I guess this is just like the rest of my project. I never know what I have until I get into it. Life is going to be boring when this car is done. Quote Selected

302 block numbers Reply #9 – December 29, 2009, 07:43:36 PM Quote from: HAVI;304313Did this replace the # letter # date code of earlier years?I'm not sure what you are referring to... All the digits I mentioned do, is verify the engine(also transmission, it has same stamp) are original to the vehicle... Has nothing to do with actual mfg of engine, though the accepted time frame is approx six weeks or less(there are exceptions though) from the time the engine parts were cast, till it was installed into a vehicle on the assembly line... I don't know on my Bird(of course it doesn't have orig engine), but my Cobra Jet Fairlane's original heads were cast Sept 5 & 7th & block Sept 11, car was built Oct 3... Currently it has a set of heads from another engine that were cast late in Sept(25th I believe), the vehicle it came from was built Oct 11... For my car, those heads are "pushing it" to be date correct, but at least were cast prior to the car being built... Quote Selected
302 block numbers Reply #10 – December 29, 2009, 08:13:18 PM I was referring to the Ford date code, such as 9J11 which is September 11th , 1969.other than that code, and the casting code (6015) I'm not aware of any lengthy numbers on the block, but again, most all my engines have been pre-80. So I was curious. Quote Selected
302 block numbers Reply #11 – December 29, 2009, 09:02:17 PM The number I'm talking about is stamped into the block & transmission at the assembly plant, original casting numbers still apply... BTW the stamp I'm referring to has been required by federal law since Jan 1 '68, my '69 Fairlane has the same stamping(year, plant, consec six) on the rear of the block just below the deck surface for the left cylinder head...
