I hate belts - "100k mile standard lifetime" for most economy cars doesn't mean much when it can get snapped back and forth at huge forces due to the quick torque changes these motors can make. Then again, I don't know what they use for belts now days and it very well could be stronger than affordable chains. Then again, chains also stretch and can go for longer change intervals, causing some nasty timing issues at older ages...not that most people care about a vehicle over 100k miles.

Any idea how much more quickly one of these belts may wear out with a driver that enjoys all their power on a daily basis? Someone here's got to know of some real world tests done by some company somewhere.

I really dont think they are using belts in these engines.  come on guys that engine looks like the Z-tec engine...  not anywhere close to looking like the new 5.0, I think they were using the pic as an example only. also sealing a belt up with aluminum covers where oil can get to them isnt a good idea. there is most likely a chain in there.

So far the thing that i really don't care for is that it looks like it runs a timing belt setup.

After doing some searching I found that's a photo of Ford's 1.6L motor with TiVCT.  The 3.7 has a chain.  I would sincerely hope that after all the touting they've done for the rest of the engine; they would not skimp in this department.

More pictures.....

And a close up......

I'm still hoping that its not true, but there IS alot of buzz about it. I wouldn't put it past ford to make such a move but I'm not convinced that the new engine has belts. The chain setup works rather well so why abandon it. I guess im just a little reluctant and I'm expecting "something" to be "up".

Those badges would look sweet on the side of my '83 with new paint lol. That would be the closest I could get to a new 'Stang.

It's gotta be a chain drive system. The cam covers extend over the sprockets. They wouldn't do that if it was a belt drive.

They need to make the engine cover say "5.0 HO" ;)

On another note, look how low and tucked in the engine is within the engine bay. [insert]droolies smiley here [/insert]

I actually wish to hell they didn't go to a 5.0. It' just annoying. It'll do however.

I'm waiting for the day when someone goes to autozone to buy parts for the Mustang 5.0 (be it either a new or a fox) and they get all confused and give them the wrong parts.  Because you know that with two entirely different 5.0 motors both in Mustangs, some moron is gonna think that parts will interchange.  lol.
