91-94 Rangers April 18, 2005, 11:04:51 PM Im looking into a 91-94 ranger 2.3, the question arises is that a murker 2.3 or a mazda. I was told it was a murker but i have always been under the impression that it was a mazda. Quote Selected
Re: 91-94 Rangers Reply #1 – April 18, 2005, 11:09:23 PM It's neither. It's a Ford 2.3. Same engine as in the Mustang and Turbo Coupe (although the TC is beefier, with forged pistons). The basic engine design has been around since the 70's Quote Selected
Re: 91-94 Rangers Reply #2 – April 18, 2005, 11:10:14 PM The Lima, isn't it? I think my '78 Pinto had a 2.3 in it. Quote Selected
Re: 91-94 Rangers Reply #3 – April 18, 2005, 11:12:09 PM yep. Its the same engine as the pinto (save for a few changes). As a side note, contrary to popular belief: it is completely differnet from the ford FWD 2.3L. Quote Selected
Re: 91-94 Rangers Reply #4 – April 18, 2005, 11:13:48 PM Nice quick responce. Thanks for clearing that up. Quote Selected
Re: 91-94 Rangers Reply #5 – April 18, 2005, 11:14:14 PM Well I sure as hell hope they'd make some changes (for the better) between 1978 and 1991. :pOn a somewhat related note, a friend and I were trying to figure out how the old Falcon he had had a small I6 with a bolt-on intake head, and my '81 Capri I6 had the infamous "log head" w/ the intake integrated into the head. It's the same series engine if I recall.. but that head seems like a change for the worse between the 60s and 80s.I hope they didn't make any such backward "improvements" to the Lima between old and new(er). Re: 91-94 Rangers Reply #6 – April 18, 2005, 11:27:40 PM Yeah i never thought much of those Capri's. Probably a duh factor but if i wanted to could i use a turbo from a murker2.3 on that ranger. Quote Selected
Re: 91-94 Rangers Reply #7 – April 19, 2005, 12:42:08 AM You'd need the entire Merkur or TC motor. As Carmen stated, the Turbo internals are stronger and a regular 2.3 will NOT last with a turbo cramming air down into it. I've talked to a couple people who have tried it and ended up ruining the motor. Quote Selected
Re: 91-94 Rangers Reply #8 – April 19, 2005, 01:06:26 AM Ok thanks, i dont know one of my friends from auto tech has an extra murker Xr4ti i think the engine in that is in decent shape. Quote Selected
Re: 91-94 Rangers Reply #9 – April 19, 2005, 09:05:24 AM Yup...you can use a turbo Lima 2.3 in a Ranger :hick: I think I can probably help you out with a swap Quote Selected

Re: 91-94 Rangers Reply #11 – April 19, 2005, 10:48:29 AM That's probaly a german focus, merkur is german for mercury. Quote Selected
Re: 91-94 Rangers Reply #12 – April 19, 2005, 10:49:04 AM I have no idea what the hell that is supposed to be. "Merkur" is just german for Mercury and the "brand" Ford of Europe stuck on the XR4 and Scorpio to sell them here in the states. It hasn't been used since (at least not here). Where did you find that? Also, on the turbo Ranger...check out TurboRangers.org Quote Selected
Re: 91-94 Rangers Reply #13 – April 19, 2005, 11:15:25 AM i was googling looking for the x4ri or what ever cryptic name they gave that car and thanks for the link chuck. That is one ulgy german focus, but what about the Ka that is the focus twin for europe. Quote Selected
Re: 91-94 Rangers Reply #14 – April 19, 2005, 11:17:16 AM XR4Ti seems cryptic until you decode it. XR4 is like any other mercury package (X-Experimental R-Racing) like an XR7 or an XR3 (Mercury Lynx circa 1982). And XR4 makes perfect sense because it's a 4-banger. Then Ti is very simple Turbocharged-intercooled. See? Simple as that! Quote Selected
