I want to put a flowmaster/edelbrock/any other good performance exhaust on my car

Ive been to flowmaster.com, edelbrock, jegs...nobody has many options for my car, 1988 Cougar 5.0, has anybody ever found a place to get a good brand name performance exhaust from?  i was looking into the flowmaster american thunder lers, cause i want a nice big sound...is there any car that can match a cougar ler?

....

Most of us use Mustang parts and get a little creative with the tailpipe section due to the extra length of these cars.

mustang h-pipe  w or w/o cats    flowmaster offset in offset out s  and dynomax mustang lx or gt tail pipes  and a pair of 18" exhaust tips.  or if you want cheaper lers  go with the welded dynomax ones  look like flowmasters and kinda sound like them too.  I had custom front pipes made and the dynomax stuff put on.  You might have to move your fuel filter to the outside of the frame. We had to on mine.

Cant really recommend performance exhaust on a non-performance engine like the SO 5.0. Itll sound like some redneck beater truck.

Id just throw a mustang exhaust on it. Tons of people rip the stock exhaust of their mustangs for aftermarket.

I had a 2.5 o/r  hpipe, with 2 1/4 intermediates and Cherry bomb vortex lers (not glasspacks) dumped before the axle and it sounded pretty good, but the 2.5 pipes made me lose a lot of low end power. Here is a little vid of what it sounded like. It did have a header leak though....

Lol I found some 3.0" around 12" glasspacks... You get some like that you'll get that classic hot rod rumble...

okay, thats good..ive found many mustang oarts on websites but none for my car..ill use those.  so from what ive heard on here it sounds like 3 inch pipes lose a lot of power, so i should go with 2.5 then?  I really just want it to sound good and loud, thats why i was looking into american thunder lers by flowmaster, and i was probably gonna lose the cats as well...let me know your opinion

On an SO motor I would probably go 2 1/4 pipes.......Mustang headers will work fine with your 5.0, just get some stang headers, an off road h pipe, and some good lers and you will like the sound you get, and most of it you could to yourself, just all bolt on stuff.

If you do decide to swap the headers yourself, beware of sagging motor mounts.......I had a lot of trouble geting my drivers side header to fit because of this, and to make a long story short, I ended up cracking one of my headers.  (hence the leak on my drivers side in the vid). The tranny linkage will get in the way of one of your studs too, but a litte grinding on that eliminates that problem.

Bigger is ALWAYS better, go for 2.5", there are lots of off the shelf Stang systems that can be adapted...

I have a Hooker system on my bird, I got from Jeg's... It comes with longer than normal intermediate pipes, had to cut them down to fit my Flowmasters... I'm using the tail pipes as supplied with the turndowns that are in the kit... They are just 4-5  inches short of reaching the bumper cover...

It was a pain in the ass to fit(as all are going to be), but I've been more than happy with it...

The ler choice will have more of an impact on that than exhaust size.
I went from the stock single exhaust to true dual 2 1/4" pipes on a 3.8 V6 (my first Cougar) and noticed a definite increase in performance.
