Here's what happened......

I was driving my little man to school this morning,and the Sport was fine.We stopped at a red light,I slipped the shifter to first,took off (no hurry) at the green light....all is good.Then,I hit second,hit the gas,and nothing.No noise,no throttle response.Dead.I pulled over,waited a few seconds,and the car started right up....O.K....I went on to the school with no more troubles (traffic was slow anyway).After I dropped Alex off,I left and headed for the salvage yard.Before I could even get a mile,the car died again.What the......I coasted into an empty parking lot and tried to start the car...nothing.Waited a few seconds,started right up.I decided to go ahead and go home and check it out.About a mile later,on the way back to the house,the Sport died again.I pulled over....again,popped the hood,couldn't find any issues other than my steering pump was barfing fluid,so,I went another mile to Autozone (lifetime warranty pump),swapped the pump in their drive,and left for home (about 7 blocks away).As I left the parking lot and rounded the corner a couple of blocks away.died again.......This time though,something different.i heard something banging around that I didn't hear before,and I knew there was nothing in the trunk to cause it.I reached under the gas tank and hit it hard.I heard something.I got the Sport home,dropped the tank,and there was the problem....the baffle in the tank came apart from the tank itself.Soooo,I got Gayle's Accord and went to my favorite yard.He said $25.00 if I pulled the tank myself.Not a problem.I already had one pulled from when I pulled the 5.0 fule lines from a Bird a few months ago.I grabbed it from under the car (no tools necessary),and stopped by a Turbo Coupe (well stripped thanks to me),and grabbed the driver side seat back.Mine is suffering from the "lean"....anyway,got the tank home,cleaned it out,swapped the pump assembly and sending unit,the fuel filler tube grommet,and now,back in business.

Now to sum it all up.The Sport's fuel tank went bad,I replaced it.Lost most of my day off,but now,The Sport is happy,and all is good.

That's my Friday story to share.

5.0 HO 306 roller block, machined GT-40P heads, Wiseco dished forged pistons, Eagle forged floating I-beam connecting rods, Lunati pushrods, ARP bolts, Scorpion aluminum 1.6 rockers, Comp Cams Magnum 266HR, Explorer intake, 65mm TB, MAF Conversion, 19# injectors, Ford Racing stainless P-headers, 2-1/2" cat-less exhaust w/ Flowtech Afterburner lers , SC AOD with 2800 BDR torque converter, 3.73 T-Lok rear, CHE rear control arms, full 2-1/2" frame w/1" jacking rails & seat supports, Rear disk brakes, Turbine wheels, All original interior w/ floor shift upgrade .......
Pretty much every panel on my 87 is new, rebuilt, or re constructed. :D

If the Sport wants a day off,all she has to do is ask.The tank is one of those "it's 21 years old !!!" parts.Stuff happens.Plus,that tank was from my blue T-Bird,and that car was the car of satan.Nothing but problems all the time.Looked great,but under that pretty exterior........the demons.Hey,that's my first wife.I'm glad she's gone,too.I have my Gayle and the Sport.I'm good.

for such a common problem(from what ive read) thankfully i never had that happen to me, knock on wood.
thats probly the last thing i would think of if my car was running funny and stalling out.

Out of curiosity how did a baffle cause the stall condition????

tank is mounted naturally at an angle with the baffel positioned so it (ie- like a 1/2gal bowl) will hold gas.  If you run your car low on fuel, upon acceleration, the fuel will slosh to the rear of the tank and fill the baffel up 


I would venture to say that he was running on a low qty of fuel at the time to.

the baffel is , i think, tac welded in place and he is saying it basically came undone.

basically, his fuel pump was hingin in mid air with no fuel.

Vinnie...we are about alike there...
I have a Nicole, and a Sport...and a Satan in my past..I mean an ex-wife. Important thing is I have a Nicole and Sport. :bowdown::rollin:Everything else doesn't matter.

Yep,that's it.Low fuel.....not really,about 1/3 of a tank.I suppose it was low enough.LOL.The bafle makes all the difference.I usually keep the tank full,so,either the baffle just came apart,or with a full tank all the time,I couldn't hear it banging around in the tank for who knows how long.If I wouldn't have heard that baffle hitting the inside of the tank,I'd still be diagnosing.The good part,it's all fixed and running great.The not so good,that money had to come from my "Sport fund",so,the head porting will have to wait a little longer.No big deal,the new engine is a "want",not a "need".It'll all come together,it always does in time.

I was just telling the truth.That blue car let me down no matter how hard I worked on it,no matter what new parts I'd install,it would fight me all the way.I always got complements on it,but the truth was,it wasn't meant to be,so,it's crushed and probably turned into a set of folding chairs by now.Do I need to send you a new bottle of Pepsi?LOL.

My blue Tbird had fuel issues after I swapped the HO into it.  you had to keep it above half a tank, or on hard acceleration it would go lean and run out of fuel...  Never did fix the issue, I just sold it....

Ah ok,you never mentioned the amount of fuel.
My old 88 used to do that when the fuel was low around corners if i gunned it.

BTW, I had a 1988 T-Bird Sport way back when. I found out that it was totalled shortly after trading it in. It still has the ignition switch recall to date.
