I don't see the article online but I do have the mag. Basically they took a boneyard EFI 5.0 from a T-Bird and installed the following:
750 Holley double pumper
Parker Single plane funnel web intake
Pro Comp 210 Heads (milled to 60cc chambers from 64cc)
TFS Track Max Cam (.499/.510 split lift, 221/225 split duration, 112 degree lobe separation)
Pro Comp roller rockers
Elgin hardened pushrods
Duraspark distributor

This combination made 399hp and 363 ft/lbs.

Major suckage on doing the carb thing...but hey..if cheap power gets ya off....:flip:

The numbers on the cam look decent...I agree, don't think it'd last too long.

Those Pro Comp heads are . Do a search at http://www.sbftech.com and fine out why. You'd be amazed at how bad they are.....

From Jay Allen on sbftech:

Quote
Seriously, been discussed more time than Carter has liver pills.

They are cheap chinese junk.
The seats fall out.
The seats are not concentric with the guides.
The valves cost 0.75 each.

This list is long.

You buy them, you are a fool.

I think the whole point of the article was to twist out 400 hp on the cheap. No one stated how long it would hold up or how streetable it would be. They even reused the timing chain, oil pump, roller lifters, and the short block was untouched to keep the cost down. I was dissapointed in that they used a carb with a single plane intake and not EFI.

i'll be running either Patriot or Edelbrock E-Streets. i was mostly interested in their cam selection.

i know the Patriots are also junk, but not as bad as the Pro Comps. they probably do not flow as good, but i will clean them up as good as i can and gasket match everything as well as probably run a bigger cam. i'll be starting with an explorer bottom end so i will have to buy pistons, so that combined with the added cost of the more pricey heads will put my total at or around $2000

This sounds like a case of not enough money and time to do it right the first time.  My experience with this type of scenerio is: it costs a lot more of both fix it when it turns out to be junk.

I've learned over the years not to take much stock in magazine article engine builds.

But hey, we all have our own learning curves and have to make our own mistakes.  Hope you have good luck with your build!

I'll be going carb on mine and quite honestly don't care who thinks I'm an idiot. ;)
