Factory markings on body?

I am getting my 86 XR7 ready for paint and noticed a marking on the car on the rear body panel that hopefully one of you all might be able to explain. Its in yellow and says"Richmond". now I have seen on other cars I have worked on "ok" and numbers and other marks but never this any clues?

just a though...
whenever i see writing on the inside of a panel(usually a rear quarter) in yellow marker its usually from it being a replacment panel after an accident, or from a junkyard.

is this stencil or by hand? grease pencil? are you talking about behind
the trunk liner--between the tlamps? just looking for a little
more detail. ford replacement parts were stencil marked
back in the 80's. the later stuff just has a decal attached
if anything. if the panel was replaced you could probably
tell.--irv

I know what you mean on jy parts but this is a ink stamp on a original rear body panel. Most of the cars I have found these things on have been when putting together some of the older original birds I did. From what I was told on those it was done after certain check points during assy, but none of those ever said a name like this does they were always "ok" or a date or someother small marking. I guess at this point I will mask it off and save it and hope to figure it out down the road

It is on the outside of the car between the taillight assys, it is hidden when the plate is on the car. It is on top of the paint and its is either a stamp or a stencil

When I painted my 87 I saw nothing like this either, althought my 87 had been around the block by that point. My sons 83 had nothing either and that is a low mileage original car. Like I said I have only seen these type of marks on the old cars I play with so I am at a loss for now. I will see if I can get a pic to show up later today, car is silver and stamp is light so who knows

Can't say as I've see this on any Bird/Coug, but if it's on the outside, added after the final paint, my guess it's for shipping purposes...

But wait, you say it isn't visible with the plate on, so it's in the 1.5" high area not covered by the tail lamp assembly that serves as plate mounting???

Similar to your 2nd pic but on the outer side of the rear body panel on top of the paint.
