need transmission help!

I recently got my 1988 Cougar up and running. Rebuilt 306 HO conversion, 1988 Speed Density 5.0 Mustang 5 speed computer, AOD transmission.
I haven't had the engine up to temperature yet, open headers. I have been adding transmission fluid,( lost some while car was sitting without motor for over a year) while running and shifting through the gears. I do not have the TV cable hooked up to the throttle body yet, because the grommet broke while trying to hook it up but the car has not moved from my garage.
The problem I am having is the transmission does not want to catch the drive and reverse while shifting the shifter. Sometimes it will catch then act like it disengages, more of a problem with reverse though.
I don't know if I still don't have enough fluid in it yet, I have already added 2 quarts. I know you are supposed to check the fluid when the engine is warm and up to operating temperature but I have never seen this before, not wanting to always engage and stay in gear.

Could this be from the computer, even though I was told you can use a 5speed computer with an aod?
Could the torque converter not be sitting right on the pump from installing the motor?
Would the TV cable not being hooked up cause this?

The transmission worked great before removing engine last year.
Thanks,
Tim

its not the computer

my experiance, i bet you either dont have enough fluid or you have alot of air in ght valvebody that hasnt worked its way out. my AOD did the same thing for a little while after i rebuilt it.

whille were on the subject of trannys.. heres my problem..

I can get in.. and go.. The tranny shifts and everything.. But in order to get going i have to press on the gas pedal verry lightly.. or mat it to the floor.. and it goes from like 0-30 mph in like 10 seconds.... as i said it shifts and everything but it doesnt have any get up and go.. like something between the engine and the tranny is eating all the power.

I was told it cant be a torque converter because it is shifting..I was told it might be the bands in the tranny are bad... I was told it might be my modulator... I have no idea what the problem is. I also dont know anythign about my transmission besides its in a 1988 cougar..and its the one that has always been in it. (as far as i know) anyone at all.. have any opinion on why it is doing this?

You can tie the TV cable to the throtlebody with any thing (wire tie, string etc...)while your waiting for a grommet, I had to do this on the roadside once. As far as the fluid goes, I would drain all of it, while you there change the filter and start from the begining so you know how many quarts are going in.
