So I've been trying to get my air conditioning fixed the past few weeks, and it's led to a hell of a search. All I need is a new compressor...

We bought the car from hertz in 1988, and shortly afterwards, the A/C went out, so my parents had Ford redo the air conditioing. When doing so, Ford used a pancake compressor as opposed to a regular FS-10 compressor like advance or Auto Zone would sell you..

Does anyone else have this pancake compressor, aka, the HR-980, on their cars?

Better check Ebay. Those Hr980's are gone by the wayside. Same thing they used on the 83-88 turbo coupes.

The only place I've found HR980s lately is acsource.com [http://www.acsource.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=744] and ebay. Not sure if they acsource HR980 has the correct body.

The HR980s are py compressors and not readily rebuildable, so they are hard to come by now. If you can't find a suitable HR980, you can convert to the 6P148A compressor. Requires brackets from a donor vehicle, new hoses to/from the compressor and new P/S pressure hose.

I doubt Ford changed it to the HR980, seen several on the 3.8s that were no doubt factory...

I have an HR980 on my factory original '84 right now.

ive found one on ebay, however the part number differs from the one on my car...

my car's compressor has the e8sz prefix, this one has an e3dz prefix...

do any of you guys know if the hr980 changed at all, or did it remainthe same through the entirety of it's existence?

and i guess its obvious why advance or auto zone wants to sell me an fs-10. they dont make hr980's anymore..

As long as it has the same pulley it should work(if it comes with one at all)... I sold one to a guy from a TC to put on a V6 Bird... Guess it worked(the pulley did need changing), never heard from him again...

The only thing I can tell you is it looks like the e3dz would mean from an 83 model where as the e8sz would mean from an 88 model. The d and the s might mean something different like witch clutch pulley or witch rear plate or witch way the rear plate is turned. Hard to say with out seeing them. But take yours off the car and look it over real good. Then take it in a box with you to the computer and look at the pic real close of the one you want to buy. If everything looks like they are all in the same locations go for it. There is still a chance that it might not be the same exact unit. Take your time and chose carefully. Also head over to the local parts store and make them drag out the book. I know around here it is the Murry brand book that has pictures of all the compressors. It normally list the Ford part numbers under the pics.

"D" stands for LTD, and "S" is for thunderbird...

I've found that there were three different versions of this compressor, the main difference being the mounting, two bolts or three.

unfortunately, my car is not with me, so i have to try to find out if its the mounting difference..
