Fixed it. Went to Summit and bought a 2 1/2" J pipe and cut into the crossover. Moved it down and back by adding a pie shaped section of mandrel bend to the driver's side, then cut off the merge and made a new one on the passenger side header. That took about 4 hours.  :wtf:

Should be enough air gap to keep things from melting now. I split the available room between the v-belt and the fan shroud.

Pics to come later. The camera has been eating up batteries, and I ran out.

I think I know what happened. When I mocked up the crossover initially, I had the radiator higher and closer to the front of the car. I never checked again after I altered the rad package. :hick:

At least I was able to save the flex section and the V-bands. The error only cost $20.00 for a new piece of pipe and a day of work.

Got some AA's and here's the pics of today's work.

Just have to re-weld the v-bands, re-paint and wrap.

I have a buddy (now the Chief Pilot at work) who worked for me when I had a British car restoration business. He traded working for me for my labor and parts for a TR6 he was rebuilding. Anyway, I always would tell him that next to my wife and kids, I loved my welder best. It has become a long-standing joke with us. I'll say I love a car or something and he'll ask"Do you love it as much as your welder?".

If you are going to have a serious shop, get a GOOD welder and you won't ever regret it. (Mine is working MUCH better now. I'm actually glad I re-did the merge, all those welds were so nasty.)

If I wasn't so busy at work the next week and a half I'd be firing it up soon. I won't be able to get it running this month, though.

I am feeling a bit nervous about the whole thing. I changed SO many things. I never had a Ford V8 before. The engine was rebuilt by someone else. The tranny is a junkyard piece. All the Megasquirt stuff. The Baumann tranny computer and new harness I made. The Holset 351VGT is an unknown. The car was a basket case, condition of the rear end is unknown. The starter and alternator are used parts from Ebay. The ignition system is a mish-mash of 4.6 and Explorer parts. The power steering is a mix of Explorer and Tbird. The list of potential issues goes on and on and on.

I was just talking to my wife last night about being a little jittery about the project, especially after screwing up on the crossover. That was a bit of a humbling experience. She was very suppportive, and reminded me how well the TR7 turned out. I just needed a pep talk I guess. I suppose that if you think too negatively you can't finish a big project.

The plan right now is to keep knocking things off the list methodically, and when I get there, I get there.

While I had the headers on I fit the turbo and marked the frame to clearance for the turbo drain line. I have a few hours today to work on that and finish up the crossover. I also found I need to re-route the wire bundle for the LC-1, it ends up too close to a header tube for my liking.

I made a new mounting for Megasquirt so I can get it out more easily, once I get that back in the heater/ dash can go in. Then there are about 3 wires to splice into the dash harness, some trunk wiring for the new fuel pump relay, and the main wiring will be ready for the start.

I still have to come up with the water hoses to connect the radiator. I'm gonna look at metal jacket ones since the hoses may come close to the exhaust pipes in a couple spots.

I'm going to use a pressure pot to prime the oil system, and I am considering starting it without the turbo on it at first. That way I can purge the exhaust of any debris that could damage the turbo. Once it has run a few minutes I'll feel better about putting it back on.

Before any of that, though, I have to get the tranny lines made up and mount the coolers. I yanked out the nose the other day, and have the support hanging on the car now. I want to mount the lower bumper/ valence to get a good spot for the coolers.

Plenty left to do.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Thanks Flylear the car is coming along nice don't let set back get you down. I did my whole swap with the car in the air put tires on it and took it for a spin and dented the sh@* out of my oil pan the geometry was totally different with weight on the wheels and the sway bar hit it had to cut and re thread the sway bar end links.
I Had planed on spending the day and tomorrow working on that but a pesky electrical fire on the hot water heater in my basp00get that set the polystyrene insulation on fire and soot-ed up the whole house, has a clean up of epic proportions under way. :(
At least I have insurance and no one was hurt. The Ins co. Said go to a hotel Is there a four season in Worcester"?

, that stinks!:yuck: (Sorry, no pun intended.)

We go into Woostah quite a bit. Nice place.

Hope you get things back to normal soon!

Hey, thanks all you guys for the kind words. I'm still rolling along. Cut a notch out of the frame and welded, painted, wrapped the headers and downpipe today. Gotta get some injectors shipped out on the way to work now.

How about if I let you know and I treat?
Hope my info helped. I like to share what I've learned with anyone who is interested.

The speedo circuit is real simple because it generates it's own "power". All you do is hook up the wires to the harness and it should work. I'll be here if you need more. Be advised that the sender has polarity. That means you have to hook the wires the right way or it won't work. You can't F it up by doing it wrong, though. Try it one way, and if it fails to work, switch 'em.
