I thinking about buying a larger tranny cooler.

I picked this one off the Summit bargain table a few years ago for cheap, but it's a bit on the small side. I can get a new 1 1/2" thick cooler for about 75.00, plus add a 7" fan to it for another 20.00 that I'd wire in with the rad fan, or to a trans oil temp sensor.

I could then just use this one for the PS cooler.

Summit is only 20 minutes away.......

Yeah, it's pretty handy. Eats up my paycheck, though!

I have a choice of this:

or this:

Here is Dirty Dog's recommended cooler, and my choices are bigger.

I'm thinking I'll get the Derale.

I'd go with Derale over B&M, personally.

Back from the store with an empty wallet, but I'm happy with what I got. I ended up getting a Derale 13960 kit with fan, shroud, and thermostat. It's thicker than the cores I was considering and is rated at 30,000 GVW +. Double what the small cooler I have is rated at.

I also was talked into a set of Percy's split-lock fasteners by the counter guy. He said he's used Stage 8 and these, and wouldn't think of using anything else. He convinced me.

Nice self contained unit. I was concerned about mounting on the other core mentioned above. This ends up being almost 1 3/4" thick.... a full inch more than the one I had.

X

I should have cleaned the dust, but this shows the thickness of the two cores. All the black on the new unit is core width.

Well, aren't you the suggestible one.

That's a nice-looking cooler unit.  What did that set you back?

I can make my own decisions.... well I usually can make them..... I don't know, can I make my own decisions? Tell me what I should think!:mullet:

These bolts are pretty slick, actually. There are no fiddly clips or eared lock tabs to fit. Just tighten them down and torque the center allen bolts and you are done. I wasn't seeing how the Stage 8's would fit all the header tubes properly. If I was going to spend money on something, these looked to be the ticket.

The kit was $230.00. :shakehead  I was able to cash in 25.00 of Summit discounts, though.
The core by itself lists for $150 ish. This came with fittings, thermostat, 10' of correct hose, 8" fan, and shroud. Best of all it's ready to fit in. I could have used the thinner core, bought a fan, fittings, and thermostat and saved some money, but I'd have been making a shroud and brackets. This core is almost 1/2 inch thicker than the one I was going to get, too.

Plus, I'd hate to buy something for $175.00 and wish later I'd got the better core.

With using lockup on the 4R70w this most certainly ought to do the trick.

I went out back and dug out the TC nose and lower bumper. Took measurements back and forth between the car and the nose. End result is........ I'm not sure where I'll be mounting this.

It appears that the 'best' spot is underneath the battery area facing in towards the engine bay. That may not give it the coolest air, but it seems to be the most likely choice. I wasn't planning to test fit the nose, but I think it might be prudent to do so before I cut a bunch of hose. I may be able to JUST squeeze it in next to the core support.

I have all Friday on standby and it's supposed to be warm, so hopefully I can get the car moved around to let me test fit things once to be sure what I want to do.

I wish a Dirty Dog billet converter was in the budget right now. I'd like to have that sucker in and not have to set a 5200 rpm fuel cut rev limit. Oh well. I'll stick to the plan and get it on the road before I make that move.

Trimmed the plastic down at the top of the radiator fan shroud and finished sealing it off with foam.

Got into modding the coil bracket next. It turned out pretty good after lots of tpuppies and bending. Mounts them lower, further back, and angled down in front a bit. Should give hood clearance now. I hope so, because it's as close to the fuel rails as I care to get.

Well, where am I?

Ground and painted the coil bracket. Working on the oil feed for the turbo right now. I came up with a location for it and put fittings on the first line from the block. Just need to weld up the bracket that will locate it. Can't make the second line until the turbo is mounted. I like working with the TFE nylon line. I hope it doesn't leak on me!

Finished off the FPR lines and tightened it all down. Painted the charge pipe and screwed in the IAT sensor to the bung.

Need to pull the fuel filter and clean the lines, then install the battery cables, fuel line connections, and fuel tank. Then it's time to bolt on the headers and finish the turbo oil drain.

I messed up laying out the crossover it seems. I went to test fit things now that the rad is in, and I'm awfully close to the fan shroud. I'm pretty sure the heat will melt it if I don't re-work the crossover to stay closer to the swaybar. Darn.:punchballs:

Dam that thins looks like it sits close to the damper too is it going to melt the belt once you shut the engine off and the belt just sits there that close to the crossover?
