1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #406 – April 30, 2011, 08:44:38 PM Just an update on the Rockauto Gabriel air shock deal. They arrived today without the fittings and lines. It's still a good deal, but the kit to replace the missing parts is $15.00, so the total is closer to $40.00 plus some shipping after all is said and done. Call it $50.00, but it is still a good savings from the $80.00 regular price. Quote Selected
1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #407 – May 01, 2011, 09:21:58 AM Changed plugs on the engine harness so I could use an older model IAC from an 88 TC instead of the Explorer part. It bolted up fine to the throttle body and appears to be working. I'll need to play with the MS settings to get it dialed in, but I can definitely control idle speed now. That's pretty much the last item on the engine control and indication side of things. Now it's time to start on the brakes and suspension.1. Change out all the rubber lines with new ones, cleaning out the hard lines as I go.2. Install new calipers, rotors and pads as required. 3. install new struts, strut mounts and shocks4. Install master and hook up it's wiring5. bleed system6. install rear suspension mount reinforcement plates While it's in the air I will probably go ahead and work on the exhaust, too. Right now the downpipe is too long to remove from the car after the heater box was installed. It hits the A/C outlet too much to get by, and won't come out the bottom. I'm hoping I can shorten it's length a bit to be able to pull it if I need to. Then I'll work from the back of the car forward with the Stinger pipes and piece in the last bit using a flex section to mate to the downpipe.I'll also have to weld in an O2 sensor bung to the v-banded section in the bay so I can get the wideband reading into Megasquirt for tuning. At that point, maybe Monday or Tuesday, I can take it out under it's own power for the first time, then wash it down so I can start the paint job prep. I'd REALLY like to be spraying color by Sunday. A couple of people have offered to help sand, so it may be possible. Quote Selected
1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #408 – May 01, 2011, 10:35:25 PM As it often happens on weekends I needed to get some cs done. It actually stopped raining long enough to cut grass and lay down some bug killer on the yard. Instead of starting the brakes I ended up getting the big dent out of the driver's door about 99% with a custom sized block of 2x4 and a deadblow along with a piece of pipe as a drift. i really thought that was going to take more effort to get close, but it's about ready for a light skim of filler. Luckily the entire dent is below the hip line. I really thought I'd be spending hours to get it this good.Front rotors will be shipped Monday, and front struts and rear shock fitting kit will be here Tuesday or Wed. Quote Selected
1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #409 – May 04, 2011, 05:05:41 AM Struts are here. Front rotors and bearings due today. Lower battle boxes bolted in ready to be stitch welded. I took a washer and cut it in half to extend the Mustang bottom side plates down, then made the hole. I think it'll be fine. I'll add some weld to the lower as well.Getting back under the car after coffee to attack the upper torque box reinforcements, mount the rear shocks, and re-do the brakes. Anyone have tips on how to properly remove the aluminum trim from the rear window? I'd hate to bend it up getting it off. It's nice and straight now, and I'd like to mask it off, but there's a hint of surface rust under a corner of it that I'd like to prep with it off.Looks like I will be coming off vacation to work a trip for my boss. His son enlisted and is going to the Middle East, so he wants to see him off. Let's all wish Paulie good fortune while he's serving so he'll come back safe and sound.EDIT: Looks like I need one of the tools in this thread http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?3921-Is-this-the-correct-window-molding-removal-tool&highlight=window+moulding Quote Selected

Had to run to the hardware store for longer 1/2" bolts for the uppers. Finally got two in on one side. 6" long is what it took. The kit came with 4"Slipping behind on my schedule. Bearings and rotors came, BUT..... one rotor was a 10" non ABS unit.Rockauto took care of a refund, but the rotors now are due in two days. All I got done today was the rear shocks and 1/2 way done on the upper reinforcements. I did find a decent set of 1/4 windows in my stash. With some elbow grease and some bumper filler they should come out pretty nice. What are you guys using to re-coat rubber parts like this? I'm thinking skim with 3M 2-part bumper filler and sand, then ??? Satin black enamel with a flex additive?I can't decide what would be a proper material to use as a topcoat. Whatever it is I'd like to use it on the rubber side moldings as well.EDIT: Looks like just a gloss enamel with flex additive would be best on the side moldings and bumper strips on the nose and rear bumper. Satin on the 1/4 windows. Quote Selected

1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #418 – May 06, 2011, 04:50:29 AM Paint will be here the 7th, front rotors not until the 9th. Looks like I'll just finish up the back end with new stuff, put on the front struts and bleed out the brake system with the old front brakes and rotors for now. I should be able to set up the paint booth and start body work this weekend. Just have to pull the 'bird side emblems, door handles and locks, 1/4 windows and the windshield/ rear window moldings and I can get to sanding.I need to run to the rental store for a stump grinder to chew down 8 stumps from trees I took down last year. Hopefully that doesn't take all day, since I'll need the truck to get some stuff home from my daughter's dorm. She'll be all done with school for this semester after today. Kept her 4.0 going so far with dual majors. Took 22 hrs this semester, too. Quote Selected
1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #419 – May 07, 2011, 03:51:01 PM Got the battle boxes welded and painted, just need a little seam sealer around the edges to be completed. All the stock rear suspension bushings still seem pretty good so I'm just going to leave them alone. One day I may go to the CHE adjustables.Paint and molding tools showed up today. Hopefully I'll get to use it next week. Just need to finish up the brakes and exhaust so I can get it back down off the jackstands and take it down the road and back.EDIT: I see we hit the 10,000 view mark recently! Quote Selected
