To answer the question directly, also.  The only T-birds that came with an 8.8" rear were the '87 and '88 TurboCoupes.

87-88 tbirds came with 7.5" open rear diff
87-88 tbird sports came with 7.5" trac loc rear diffs (273 gears)
87-88 turbo coupe had the 8.8 rear. they use the same diff gears and trac loc as the mustangs. the axle is longer and the tcoupes have disk brakes. the automatics have 373 gears and the 5 speed cars came with 355s.

That;s what my '87 Sport had until I installed a set of 3.27 gears out of a V6 'Bird

no kiddin huh....did they offer them out for 88? makes me wonder what i have. the car seems awefully long winded though. were you able to tell much of a differance between the 3.37s and the 3.08?

I couldn't feel much difference, I only replaced 'em because the bearings went south and I had to take the rear apart anyway. I think the fact that I couldn't feel much difference was because I had also added Mac headers and 2.25" true duals at the same time, probably sacrificing a bit of low end punch on my otherwise bone stock SO engine.

To clarify, 8.8 gears cannot be used in the 7.5 housing, a complete 8.8 rear assembly can be swapped into any Fox Tbird/Coug..

Right. 7.5" 2.73 or 3.08 were it for 5.0 cars. 87-88 Turbo Coupes had 8.8" 3.55 (5-speed) or 3.73 (auto)
