Today we found out that the fluid pump in the tranny was bad due to the guy who first installed it using the wrong bellhousing and it sandwitched the torque converter into the spline gears and broke the pump. My question is this. how hard and expensive is it to replace this pump? I'm realy looking forward to getting it running and this is the only thing holding the project up.

Short answer: easy, just pull the bolts and then wiggle the pump out.

Long answer: depending on the year and make up they have a small thrust washer on the back that can fall off and get damaged upon re-installation. It can be done...just be careful and check out a diagram that shows part locations so you see what goes where. It might not be a bad idea to adjust the bands down tight to try and hold the guts tight while you are removing the pump...just remember to re-adjust the bands to spec...

I usually get a donor transmission from the yard for stuff like that. New pump can cost much moola. If you pull the pump and don't want to loose any parts, just stand it up (however you can) and pull it that way. Usually comes out with a few love taps of a mallet. Replace with good pump, torque bolts, and check endplay of input shaft.
If you are going to do that I would recommend tearing the guts out and looking for any more abnormal wear. If your pump is bad you don't want any of that floating around your transmission. It will cause more turmoil later. Any bluing on the internals means extreme heat and will also need to be replaced.

This is all just my opinion. Past mistakes have led me to doing it right the first time so I don't have to do it again later.:D
