what bell housing do I need, anybody know?

apparently, from what a friend told me, I have a FMX transmission. (dont know)

my question is this, with a 66 289 with a 164 tooth flex plate, and this transmission, does anyone know what bell housing I need, and do I need a spacer plate?

aparently they take a 16th inch spacer plate? again, I dont know.

lol thats the bad thing, we dont know if the one thats on it was the original bell housing or not, we bought someone elses' headache. lol its got the 6 1/4" bell housing, and we're thinking it needs a 6 3/4" bell.  we bolted the other one on, without the spacer, had a realy hard time getting it on, noticed the flexplate wouldnt budge, and then when we went to take it back off, the bell cracked right down the pass. side.

If you are going to purchase another bell housing....it may be more cost effective to scour the news paper and craigs list to find a different tranny. An AOD is really stout for the cost.

FMXs are cast iron, you know that much don't you??? 99% you have correct bellhousing, but wrong flexplate... Anything for a FMX is getting hard to find in the junk yards, last cars I know of that used it were the '79 Tbird & Cougar and probably the the full size models... The AOD became avail in '80 and FMX's were gone...

ALL 289(from '65), 302/5.0 and 351W & C use the same bell housing bolt pattern... 5.0s from '81-up require a different balanced flexplate than do the other engines...

Which is a good reason to use something other than the FMX...parts availability.
