Difference between US/CANADA/MEXICO spec Catbirds..... Reply #16 – March 06, 2009, 12:35:02 PM Tapkin, if your T-Bird is Canadian it will have a sticker inside the driver's door jamb with the Canadian maple leaf saying that the car meets CMVSS (Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) and should also have a calibration number. I don't think the VIN will tell you whether it's a Canadian car or not.Eric: Back to bumper standards, I was reading an article in a car magazine the other day that says that the Fiat 500 will not be coming to Canada because our bumper standards require no damage to the lighting in 8km/hr (5MPH) crashes. I'd imagine that's prettty much what the standards were back then, too...Tapkin: You can see the CMVSS sticker in this photo of my car's door tag: Quote Selected

I cant remember. Obviously his isnt with the VIN we have. I think sumweirdo's is a Canadian built car.Just wondering. Those safety standards are crazy. Just odd things to me. Quote Selected
Difference between US/CANADA/MEXICO spec Catbirds..... Reply #19 – March 06, 2009, 04:23:26 PM Ford of Canada has built all kinds of cars (including Crown Vics, F150's, etc), but all Fox T-Birds and Cougars were built in USA, most in Lorain, OH. You can see on the door tag I posted that it says "Manufactured by FoMoCo in USA". Quote Selected

I'm not aware of any other modifications, but again that depends on the country. If someone imports a Cougar or T-Bird into Europe now, those might still be the only mods necessary. It's easier to import a U.S. car into Europe than vice-versa.Amber turn signals had to be added on the rear. Most of the time the reverse lights got amber lenses and some rewiring. Shevretti could shed some light on this. Quote Selected
Difference between US/CANADA/MEXICO spec Catbirds..... Reply #22 – March 06, 2009, 10:41:01 PM First time i´ve seen this thread Eric is absolutely right. Those odd wheels are very common here. In fact, at least 80% of the "Ford Cougars" have those. That was the first cause i wanted a very different set of wheels, and like Carm said, the only natural choice were Contour/Focus wheels. They are 4 lug of course. I remember clearly that those wheels have the "Ford Logo" stamped at the center of the wheel. I´ll try to get a photo for you guys. Mexican Cougars are very stripped, much like canadian cars. Mine had manual mirrors, no stereo, manual seats, etc. The 3.8 engines are carbureted, they used the 2100 and 2150V. There were no 83 model year, and 84´s are getting very rare, so you wont find one easily with the waterfall grille. The vast majority of the cars had the 1/2 top like Eric said. Here, there was a 4 eye T-Bird with a manual transmission and a V6.I think these are 4 speed. These are getting very rare, but i have seen them. I need to take many photos to prove that. Quote from: EricCoolCats;256936 The Cougar especially is considered a sort of "pimp" or status car in Mexico City (population 11 million). I joined the forum in 2004 and only had the Cougar. Now i have a F-150, an Explorer, and payed the College. The bussiness is good. Now you know the truth about Mexican Cougars.....hahaha, J/KQuote from: EricCoolCats;256936I receive a considerable amount of e-mail in Spanish from people in Mexico City that own Cougars. It's quite a cool thing, and if I weren't so afraid of being kidnapped and held for ransom, I'd consider a trip to Mexico City just for that fact.Heck, even I wouldn´t go there without a M-16 in one hand and a Winchester Riot at the other..... or a Sherman Tank. Difference between US/CANADA/MEXICO spec Catbirds..... Reply #24 – March 11, 2009, 11:34:24 AM Just to elaborate on the MN12's a hair, the cougars were supercharged up until 95 in Mexico. They didn't have any ground effects, or anything of the nature. They typically didn't have ABS, ride control, or anything like the XR7's we had here. Quote Selected

As I see, my car have: sport seats, different door panels, floor shifter... thats all? Diff with lock also, but i think that's not stockWhat Eric means is that your car is a Thunderbird Sport. There were four flavours of Thunderbird in '87-'88: Base, LX, Sport and Turbo Coupe. There are trim/drivetrain differences between the bunch, but these are things that can be changed by owners. Only the VIN tells you for sure which of the four you have.Your VIN starts out 1FABP61... The 61 means it's a Sport. YOu'll notice the VIN in the sticker I posted starts out 1FABP60 - the 60 means it's a Base. 62 would be an LX, and 64 would be a Turbo Coupe. 63 is not used. Now what it means to have a 1988 Thunderbird Sport:1988 Sports featured Sport seats, full buttstuffogue instrumentation, floor shifter, blacked out window trim (as opposed to chrome on base and LX) stiffer springs, Turbo-Coupe-spec sway bars, 7.5" traction-lock rear end with quad shocks and 10" drums. It was not mentioned in any literature, but we've come to the conclusion on this forum that some late 88's had the 8.8" rear (probably leftovers from the run of XR7 Cougars). Yours is an early 88, though, so it likely has the 7.5 (according to your door tag, it's got the 2.73 gears). The 5.0 non-HO engine and AOD transmission were the only drivetrain offered in the Sport.
