more converter questions.... stall

sorry for more questions on this, but im having trouble finding a high stall lockup converter for my aod. the highest i found so far was the super streetfighter at 3000, but i was looking for somthing more like 3800-4000. does anyone know a company that makes a higher stall lockup converter? i guess i can get away with this one, but i figure its worth asking about. i cant remember off hand but i think the cam i had made recomended about a 4000 stall.

yeah, theres a big name local shop (performance automatic) that said they could build me a custom converter, its just that they said itll be $900. and since thats about double what most tci converters go for i thought i'd ask. since i doubt im gonna find and ots converter, what do you guys think? for a 347 stroker with a cam that recomends a 4000 stall, will 3000 be enough? or will that kill my et's too much and i should get a custom one. idk anything about converters so idk if 1000 less will kill all performance

Custom lock up may be your only choice for a 4000 lockup stall. I'd call Edge converters, Performance Industries or Dirty Dog but they might want you to go non-lock.
Iirc the TCI lockup converter in my car was sold as a 3000+ converter. My engine is pitiful and it wont stall high, your engine will stall way higher. Some of the transmission guys say don't buy the spaceship style converter because it is 2 converters welded together and wont hold up. Imho it is way better than stock though :evilgrin: but if it does come apart, rebuilding the converter will seem small compared to the transmission. (converter pn 433100?)
It's good to change the direct drive input lockup shaft to a special hardened steel type so it won't break as easy. I got one from Baumann which may or may not be as good as the one from Summit.
That is going to be one badass car:evilgrin: :evilgrin: :evilgrin:

i was looking at that 433100 converter earlier actually, and was considering buying it untill i saw it was a race converter. thats the highest stall OTS lockup i could find. what does it mean for it to be a race converter? i plan on driving this on the street too, so seeing that scared me away. it claims to be 3200, i guess it may stall a touch more with my setup, so if its ok for street this may be a possible choice.

I have one of their 9.5" in my car, but it's only a 2600...

What if you run a killer cooler with a non lockup on the steet? You might be happier with that

If you have to have a generic ots "high stall" lock up converter, I wouldn't worry about that converter being too big but it would be wise to run a cooler with it as well.
What rpm did he say you'll make peak torque at? Don't flash stall higher than 700rpm below peak torque.
The 433100 would be a blast behind a 347 :burnout: but don't rule out the pro's suggestions of a non-lock to get it really dialed in. :bowdown:

its not that im worried to run a nonlockup on the street, its that i cant without tearing apart the transmisions to install a one piece input shaft that will accept a nonlock converter. im not worried that the 433100 is too much stall, if anything its still too little, but its classified as a 'race' converter, not a street/strip. so idk how it will be in street driving. i dont have the cam card in front of me, but i think peak torque was about 4500, and the recomended stall was 4000-4400.

It's fine on the street with my motor and you at least triple my power. Just be wary, they say it won't hold up. Imho putting a one piece direct shaft in there is alot easier than an overhaul later IF it comes apart but then you could always upgrade to a 4r70w with an electric lockup

oh so youre running that converter on the street? i misunderstood. yea, i only really plan for it to be an AOD for a year or so, then ill upgrade. this is just to get it on the road and keep me happy so i dont wanna put a whole lot into this if i can help it. how long have you been using this converter for?

You plan to run a big stall 3500+ on a stock aod, good luck!
First it has to be made, then they will laugh at you!
Your motor got more then any stock tranny will hold up.
Your not to far away I got a built aod on a pallet I took out of mine . Less than 1000 miles on it.
Got a 2800 stall non lock on it. If your interested. I had it posted in the for sale a while ago.
The converter itself cost me $750. If your interested talk.

It's in the for sale. may have to go back a bit.
Sales slip is there. It was the one in when I was at your house.
