28 spline axle question January 03, 2009, 06:52:37 PM Ok,I do have 28 spline axles from both linc mk7 and a 96 mustang.the lincs feel a little heavier.just wondering ,I am putting them in the 8.8 and trying to figure if they will hold up pretty good behind a mild BBC.I will be running a 9 in slick and sometimes on street tires.just wanted to know if anybody has a car that has stock 28 spline axles and how they are holding up?thanks for your input.kenny-psIts a 3.55 L gear Quote Selected
28 spline axle question Reply #1 – January 03, 2009, 07:02:17 PM Got around 500 ponies in my sbf with stock 28 splines and they have held up for 3 yrs. However i have not used slicks and don't launch it hard.If i was going to i'd be inclined to go 31 spline. Quote Selected
28 spline axle question Reply #2 – January 03, 2009, 07:49:07 PM i ran over 10 years with the same 3:89 ring gear-9" 28 axles in my 1970-429SCJ with 1979-460 crank in 72 mustang with a C-6 that had 1800rpm stall converter . i used N50 superstreet tires. i ran the stang on the street and strip. if you have high(2500+) stall converter and slicks then 28's not going to last long Quote Selected
28 spline axle question Reply #3 – January 03, 2009, 08:57:00 PM But you ran a 9" not an 8.8,9" axles are stronger as they don't taper. Quote Selected

28 spline axle question Reply #5 – January 03, 2009, 11:22:00 PM Disagree with ya on the 8.8 being just as strong as any 9".Not true, not anywhere close.9s have always been one of the strongest ford rears period. My 28s in my 75 coug don't taper. Quote Selected

28 spline axle question Reply #7 – January 04, 2009, 10:17:20 AM Do yall think that maybe a jegs or summitt style 28 spline axle(they say 40 % stronger) will work better than stock ones.I have a mild Rv cam with a 30 over BB,with a i believe 1800 stall (its a little above stock).I just dont know where to turn now cause I thought my gears was 31 spline and they are 28s in the 54 in housing. If I went to 31s I dont know what cars or trucks to look for to get the gears and the axles.I di think one time about explorer with 31 splined but, length of axle is short and not sure if the chunk will fit the car housing. 28 spline axle question Reply #8 – January 04, 2009, 04:21:11 PM Use the explorer center section and I belive the stock mustang FOXbody use that lenght axel. Quote Selected
