Dear Fellow Enthusiast,

As a SEMA Member Company, we have received an Urgent Legislative Action Alert from the association. You may be interested in this legislative alert and the possible impact it will have on your hobby.

The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) is a non-profit trade association composed of more than 6,800 member companies involved in all aspects of the automotive industry, from manufacturers to car clubs and race teams.

The SEMA Action Network (SAN) protects your hobby from unfair or unnecessary legislation on national and local levels. Through distribution of information and the collective voice of automotive enthusiasts and businesses, the SEMA Action Network has successfully impacted legislation concerning spage laws, equipment standards, registration classifications, emissions regulations, and more.

The following information is directly from SEMA. If you would like to contact the lawmaker, follow the instructions in the alert.

Thank you for your time,

Washington lawmakers are drafting a large economic stimulus package to help create jobs and rebuild infrastructure. They want to include a nationwide spage program which would give U.S. tax dollars to consumers who turn-in older cars to have them crushed, as a misguided attempt to spur new car sales. The lawmakers need to s this idea.

The stimulus package is being drafted right now. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) wants to introduce the bill on January 6 and have it approved by Congress by January 20, so that President Obama can sign it into law after he is inaugurated.

Talking Points
Feel free to use any of the statements below as a starting point for your message to Speaker Pelosi.
I am [calling/writing] to urge lawmakers not to include a “Cash for Clunkers” provision in the economic stimulus bill. Owners who turn in vehicles for crushing would receive a "minimal" payment to purchase a new car. This is a misguided attempt to spur car sales and claim that the country’s air quality or fleet fuel mileage is being improved.
I work for [company name] located in [city and state]. My company is part of the specialty automotive industry, an industry which enables consumers to enhance their vehicle’s appearance, performance, comfort, convenience and safety. “Cash for Clunkers” programs deny our small businesses the availability of older cars necessary to develop and market their products and services. The programs will hurt my company and our customers.
“Cash for Clunkers” programs threaten enthusiasts nationwide with the loss of valuable parts and parts-cars for repair, restoration, and customization projects. The programs also risk destroying classic, historic and special-interest vehicles, our American heritage.
Cars turned in for spage often barely run, or are rarely-driven second or third vehicles that have a minimal impact on overall fuel economy or emissions.
“Cash for Clunkers” programs will reduce the availability of affordable transportation and repair parts used by low-income drivers. It will also compete with the Salvation Army, the Purple Heart and other charities that rely on vehicle donations to raise money.
“Cash for Clunkers” ignores better policy options. If Congress wants to act, support for repair and upgrade is a better choice and a win-win for consumers, dealers, manufacturers and repair shops. Significant emissions and fuel economy improvements can be achieved in older vehicles through relatively simple and inexpensive means: repaired/replaced exhaust systems, tune-ups, etc.
We hope we can count on you to reject “Cash for Clunkers.” Thank you for your consideration on this very important matter.

:mullet:

BTW, if you think your call doesn't matter - I still have a letter from my local rep. who assured me that they would not pass the "s" law - this from the last time this was attempted. Note that this is a non-partisan issue best I can tell, so don't assume anything based on party affiliation. This is not the first time this was attempted and the last time Congress was controlled by the R's, not the D's.

I've got news for those of you opposing this bill: The high s prices of the last summer have done more to damage the old car hobby than any legislation short of outright banning old cars ever could. It was so bad that junkyard owners were actually advertising that they pay you for your old wrecks (instead of you having to pay to dispose of them).

Sending old cars to junkyards isn't necessarily a bad thing, because it doesn't necessarily mean cars will be sent to the crusher en masse. Syards will hang onto them if s prices stay low. I'd rather a syard have an old car and sell parts off it than let it rot behind someone's house where it does nobody any good...

Thanks for posting actual common sense on this topic!

I went to the s yards and took everything off the Cougars/Tbirds that was of any use and I could store. Then they sat, and sat, and sat and guess what? The s yard got tired of them and now it's nearly impossible to find any Fox cars in a junkyard :( It's called the "free market". Granted, I don't want the government promoting the sping of cars, but even without this legislation, if there's no demand for the parts, they will get crushed to make room for newer more desirable models.

Im not sure what WA or NH states problems are with finding information.

The (original 500B)stimulus package was in the news 10 months ago.

anyway, when i see what someone said,  i tend to lean more toward "what they meant".  Forward thinking so to speak.  I wasted some time on this topic because it really isnt news at all guys, its just in work and yes it is coming but not like we didnt expect the rest of the us to live up to California standards sooner or later.

By the way,, as with many things, Illinois is who to blame on this one.  Its been a dream works brain teaser for a couple years called the "Energy Vision Act",,,,,,,,,,,,,which is in the house sub titled and masked. I had to work very hard to find """"CURRENT LEGISLATION""" ., ill let you guys try and find it since im not all that good at this stuff:flip:
-----------------------------------------------------
January 6, 2009
As President-elect Obama met with congressional leaders Monday to discuss the economic recovery plan, the U.S. automakers were reporting their worst year in nearly a half century. The incoming administration needs to act quickly to stimulate our ailing economy, prevent the collapse of the auto industry and tackle climate change and oil dependence. One policy idea might simultaneously rev up the engine on all three challenges—cash for clunkers.

Offering cash vouchers to clunker owners in exchange for their old, polluting cars is an idea that should be getting more attention. Drivers could use the vouchers toward the purchase of newer, more fuel-efficient vehicles, with the old vehicles sped to get them off the road.

------------------------------------------------------------
Assuming the program sped five million vehicles (5 percent of the fleet greater than 10 years old) for vouchers that averaged $2,000 each, the total cost of the program would be $10 billion per year—though some of that cost can be offset by the value of the s metal. Larger vouchers would induce more partition and achieve greater fiscal stimulus. Assuming the sped vehicles averaged 15 miles-per-gallon and were replaced by vehicles averaging 25, the program would save 17.6 million tons of carbon dioxide, 26 thousand tons of nitrous oxide, and two billion gallons of gasoline.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Oil Import Replacements in the Energy VISION Act:

        • Total: 9.5M barrels per day*
                • Savings from a tax credit for trading in old cars for newer, more fuel efficient models:
                        • 2M barrels per day
                • Savings from replacing current conventional aviation fuel with an aviation fuel
                  prize winner:
                        • 1.5M barrels per day
                • Arctic coastal plain production:
                        • 1.5M barrels per day
                • Outer Continental Shelf production:
                        • 2.4M barrels per day
                • Oil Shale development and production:
                        • 2M barrels per day
                • Savings from the use of anti-idling technology:
                        • 100,000 barrels per day
