Finally hit home...

Well I made a trip home today to drop some stuff off from my dorm, just to find out my Dad has been laid off...

Good news is I don't come back to school until the end of next month so I can help out since Ill have the time to work more. So I will be working my ass off the next month and a half. Other good news is they are letting him work the dock (he is a driver) for 30 hrs (we'll see what that ends up being) for the same pay. I hate to say it but he is getting old and he wasn't so nice to his body when he was younger, so I already know this is going to be hard on him physically now too.

This is the problem I have now. He is new with the company so when it comes down to it he will be let go before others. So I have to decide what I am going to do to make sure I do everything I can.

I have 2 cars right now, the SHO is almost together and it shouldn't take much to get it running right. The Cougar is running like ass, I think it is missing, but I have been neglecting it. The plan was to take the Cougar off the road and drive the SHO. Now I have to decide if I should sell the SHO, give it to my dad or sell the Cougar. I planned to NEVER sell the Cougar but things change. If I keep it and sell the SHO Ill need to get it running right and try and stop the rust as the salt will only make it worse. If I give the SHO to my Dad then I can sell his Caprice and they will have extra money for the bills. I will need to fix the Cougar if I do this too.

In a perfect world I could keep both and everything would be fine. Oh wait in a perfect world I wouldn't be in this situation. Life isn't fair and the world isn't perfect oh well. So now I need to decide what to do.

1. Sell SHO

2. Sell Cougar

3. Give SHO to Dad and sell Caprice

4. Work my ass off and hope it all works out for the best

Just need some outside input on this. I'm afraid that the SHO will be going away... there are more though.

I commend you for not being one of these me me me selfish kids that seem to be so prevalent these days. You're willing to step up and do what is necessary. BRAVO!

Having had to part with a car for real world concerns, I know how you must feel. BUT, you're much luckier than I was in that what I parted with was a big $$$ Six Pack E body, and I'll probably never own another.

So sit down with your dad and have a conversation. See what his thoughts on the matter are. Then do what you feel is best.

Thanks but it was just the way I was raised. Too much pride involved to talk with him about it. He wont want me to do anything. Sucks you had to sell. Mine are easier to replace down the road. The Cougar was my first car so Ill never get that back, SHOs are a lot easier to find. I really hope working will be enough to get us by and I can keep the cars but I don't think it will. I have to decide between the SHO and the Cougar by he 31st because then neither will be legal.

if times are that bad, sell both project and help your family. all car's can be replace at later time in your life but helping your parents in more important at this time.

fix the cougar and SHO
give him SHO, drive your car and hope u can get everything back to normal.

from what I have seen in life, a son takes after his father (in cases where they are raised by them anyway). I say this because I constantly hear "your just like your father" and "ohhh.. NOW I know where you get it" and then I raised two boys myself and quite often I hear "OMG he's JUST like you" so that would lead me to believe the old saying "like father like son".
So based on that, and based on your good intentions posted here in this thread, and the fact that you are thinking through a plan on what you can do to help. I would be willing to bet your father already has a plan as well. And based on another observation I have made in life "with age comes wisdom" I'll bet your fathers plan is as good, if not much better than yours.
I would suggest you have faith, based on your selflessness, it doesn't seem like he did too bad of a job raising you so I would also be willing to bet he has this undercontrol. I would suggest as Turbo 88 does, sit down and talk with him. If not to see what you can do to help, (throw that out there) but to learn more from him than you already have. Again another bet I'll take, you will come out of that talk a little wiser, and with a "wow he is so smart" attatude and a little more appreciation for the "old man" I know I do every time I talk with my dad.

I think I am going to talk with him this weekend some time. Im sure he has a plan and I know he has money tucked away for things like this that he doesn't even tell my Mom about. It just worries me because we went though this a year and a half ago when "they" fired him from his job of 14 years I think it was. Just right out the door. I wont get into the details of that company. My uncle still works there so I don't want to bad mouth them since he still need them to survive. It was harder then because there was little income at all. I don't want that to happen again and the dock thing might be short lived. I am going to get a fender tomorrow and throw it on the SHO, beat the hood semi straight and try and get it tagged. I think I might take the Caprice from him, give him the SHO then park the Cougar. The I just need something to go back and forth to work for now so I could do that and sell it then get something else and give them whats left. Doubt that will happen though.

Ill let you guys know what we come up with as far as the cars. I'm off to work.

In times like these,, dont be so sure there is money tucked away. Ive been there and i found the hardest job is finding a job.

The caprice wont sell today,, too much bad rap on gas prices. However, it is the car to sell.

Do what you can as your needing to help. Dont ask if you can, just do it. That way mom and dad see who they truely raised.

Im proud of you and those like you , and Im not even your dad:bowdown:

mad props to you and the best of luck....do what ya must but remember...about ur cat...cars can be replaces but first cars and memories cant ...trust me my 87 cougar is my first car ive owned for 10 years and is now some what a project but if it came down i would sell my vert in a heart beat to keep my 87..but family does come first....my freind

Talked to him yesterday. We are selling our old van. I forgot we had it, on of those things you walk by everyday and dont even notice (yeah even a huge van). So that will hold off selling a car for now. I told him that I would give him the SHO and sell his car for him. He said that until the Automakers decide what the hell they are going to do his job is up in the air.

Good news is I got 55 hours thid week! Time and a half for 15 hours, Ill take it. So that should help. Doing little things to on the SHO when I have a few minutes. Well Ill be tired for Christmas but Im off the 22nd and 23rd so Illl have a break in there.

Just keep at it. Having a backup plan is always the way to go. Even if you are selling the Van and even later on the Caprice, working your ass of right now is still worth it in one way or another. If it cant go to help your parents, it could help you. Ive spent the last 3 months working 2 jobs catching up on my bills, and Ive broke even and I owe my parents huge. I lost my job and moved to find one. I picked up the first one I could and now its paid off putting in the hours and working hard. Im 20 and I havent experienced that much in life, but Im doing what I can to make sure that if I do end up in my previous situation I dont have to rely on anyone to help me, I want to be able to say that I worked hard enough to have a backup plan. And I have quite a few suprises for my parents since they helped me move and helped me through my 2 week jobless period.

#4 and while doing that the caprice seems like it might sell but that could put you in a bind with everyone not having a car. how much money do you think it might take to even fix the sho to make it a good A to B car?
