Painting a 3G Alternator

I want to paint the case of my 3G before I install it.  Before I can paint it, I need to take all the internals out.  Has anyone here done this before?
If I can't take out the internals, I'd be afraid to even try polishing it, because of the risk that dirt and sanding debris would get inside and foul the rotor, or stator.
Anyone have feedback on this?

if it were me, I'd take it to a shop that rebuilds alternators.

I called around to a couple shops today about that.  The lowest price I got to tear the alt down to bare cases and then to put it back together after I had painted the cases was $90.  I'm going to just wire brush the thing and call it done.

Thats what I did about 6 months ago to my mustang alternator-no problem whatsoever. I did take the pulley off to get behind it.

it should just slide apart after you remove the long skinny screws. use a paper clip to hold the brushes back when you slide it back together. you'll need to take the pulley off, too.

Hrrmmmm...I just taped mine off really well, held it out at arms' length, and hit it with spray paint very lightly. It's been holding up just fine. I didn't see any need to tear it apart. Unless you're polishing, powder coating, or automotive painting the casing, it's probably unnecessary to disassemble it. But if you are doing any of those then yeah, I think you'd need to take it somewhere.

Doesn't PA Performance sell a chrome 3G? Thought they did...

I've got this thing nice and clean now.  I think you talked me into masking this thing off well and dusting it with paint Eric.
I'm curious.  How did you keep paint from going in the ventilation holes Eric?  There's no way to mask them off.

There is an art to spray paint...the theory behind any propelled paint is that it will find its way into any groove, slot or hole. The trick is to NOT aim for those areas, but aim AROUND it. In that respect the paint should fall fairly nicely where you want it to go, and the other areas are "collateral".

Also you want very light coats of paint, and build them up. This avoids putting too much paint in undesired areas. It's an exercise in patience but it does work. In my case, I just sprayed the casing a different shade of silver, so it was really no big deal if I missed anything.

So what color is your casing now, and what color is the paint you're using?

The case was bare and I'm painting it with aluminum paint.  It looked fairly good once I had cleaned it up.  I'm painting it though, so that it will look really good.
Thanks for that input Eric.  I don't care what kind of vericose things Claude told me about you.  You're alright in my book.  ;)
