A/C Compressor? November 03, 2008, 11:39:24 PM I've got the option to buy an A/C compressor that came off a junkyard T Bird (with a 5.0) for a good price ($10). Would it be foolish to even bother with a junkyard compressor like this, no matter how good the price? Since I'd have to charge my system with R134, wouldn't the compressor have to be in top-notch shape to not leak and cause other problems? Quote Selected
A/C Compressor? Reply #1 – November 03, 2008, 11:55:05 PM I used the one from the 5.0 parts Bird on mine, had no idea whether it was any good, but system was intact(though discharged)... After I installed on the TC, it held vacuum when I evacuated the system... Charged it with R12, still cools fine seven years later... After a couple years I had to replace the clutch assembly(took one off another compressor), but that's been the only problem... Quote Selected

I'm surprised you were able to get your hands on enough R12 to charge your system. That stuff sure seems to be hard to find, unless you have connections that is.I'd sure love to use R12 instead of R134 in my system. Quote Selected

Go to your local parts store and Ask someone that has been there sometime of a Shade tree type mechanic that is certified and I bet you will find a good deal. He waorked at a Chevy dealership for 25 years and has his own mobile auto repair business now. He has to be licensed for it. I'm gonna give him a call today and see what he has to say. Quote Selected

A/C Compressor? Reply #6 – November 04, 2008, 09:51:28 PM Well the specs will be telling you how much R12 not how much R134a. They are a little different so different amounts of each one is needed. Best to fill it to the right pressure for R134a. If I remember right I believe that is 30-40lbs depending on ambient temp outside. Then there are other options depending on where you go and what you are wanting your system to do. Check out some stuff called Freeze12 legal for anyone to buy and can be used with R12. Also keeps colder while sitting still compared to R134a. There are many other options that your certified guy can use so check with him. Quote Selected
