So I finally made my first parts sale...

I sold my old AOD to a guy on a local forum for $100 (yes, cheap, but he helped me out on T5 stuff).  I told him it was a tranny with 150,000 miles on it and has never been touched, and that it was working fine when removed from the car.  So PMd me yesterday saying that he installed it, drove 10 miles, and the pump exploded in it.  Could anyone shed some light on this (on the mechanical side of things, and how i should handle it)?  I don't know why the tranny itself would fail so quickly; it was working perfectly when I removed it, and for the 30k miles I've driven it over the past couple of years.

installation or removal of the converter can damage the pump is all i can think of. did you give him your flexplate, too?

he didnt seat the torque converter properly and FUBARed the pump seal...  trust me Ive done it myself...  DONT give him his money back for his stupidity....

he fried the tranny by incorrectly installing it...

Don't feel bad, If I bought a $100 used tranny I wouldn't expect much (expecially an AOD) I wouldn't refund the money either, nor would I expect a refund if it were me with the bad tranny now.

@32V:  All I sold him was the torque converter and tranny.

I've seen it too.Installing the torque converter without seating it properly,using the bolts to pull the tranny to the block,and BAM,bad tranny.Keep the money.If he gets cranky,too bad.I always sell those parts as-is.Otherwise,you're doomed due to someone else's py work.

Don't feel bad. I sold a used C4 for $900. I saw him a few months later and he tells me the front pump blew out after 50 miles. Trans was perfect when I sold it. Used parts are used parts. Everyone gambles when they buy them.

uhhh
last time i checked,

you install the torque converter and seat it all the way back.

rotate torque converter  so the studs are lined up with the flywheel.

if there is a paint mark on the converter and the flywheel, you line those two up as close as possible

mate the block to the bell
reach up inside the bell and scoot the converter up and into the flywheel bolt holes.

install nuts on the converter through the starter opening.

I cant imagine how someone could randomly do anything other than what i described.

My first thoughts when you replied above was the fellow did not fill the converter up with fluid helping to prime the system.  Ill bet he was low on fluid and did not know.
