Latest update on the saga: They told me I should pay the (now severely in arrears) bill, they'll straighten it out later and refund me. Yeah, like that's gonna happen...


Should they call again, tell them that your lawyer will be in touch with them and that you would like a contact number so he can reach them. 
I had a similar situation once.  Phone company in NJ (back in the USAF) Paid the bill in full and That statement was the way it finally got resolved as the account was closed  and I never received another call from them.
