Cylinder order?

Ok, I know this is a stupid question, but not sure what else to do/ask... I have a 5.0 out of an 88 tbird that I dropped into an 82GT 'stang, that's had the cam swapped for a b303, it "should" therefore be on the HO/351 firing order... problem is, all was well untill me & my brother decided to change the plugs & wires, now I can't time it, it backfires through the carb, runs like , basically. Well, he wasnt paying attentionwhen he pulled all of the wires & then got distracted with something else, therefore forgetting how the wires were routed.. NOW.. on a standard 302/5.0l the cylinders are 1234/5678 front to back, starting on the pass. side. he Swears that when he took them off the #1 plug was on the drivers side/front.. is there some other differance between the stang & tbirds that would cause this problem that I am missing here? If not, anyone here have any other ideas, as this car was running great before we changed the wires/plugs, just had a slight miss, we thought the almost 20 year wires were the cause.. now I'm in it  deep.

If someone has installed the distributor incorrectly in the past, and compensated by moving the plug wires, #1(as indicated on the cap), could be on any cylinder...

Rotate it to TDC on the compression stroke and see where the rotor is pointing...

And just to make sure this is clear: The #1 cylinder is front passenger side.

Don't forget the distributor rotates counter clockwise...important when putting new wires on from scratch....ask me how I know!...lol

Good luck,
