Average Miles per gallon March 16, 2005, 01:53:33 PM What’s average mileage for a 4, 6, & 8 cylinder thunderbird? My daily driver is an 8 cylinder and reaching the end of its life and I was thinking of replacing it with a 4-cylinder turbo.What do you think Quote Selected

Re: Average Miles per gallon Reply #5 – March 16, 2005, 07:21:30 PM Its a 83 thunderbird. Bought is for $400 3 years ago. It has the 5.0 out of my first blue t-bird that got rear ended. Its right around the 150,000 mark wich seems to be when the seals in these engines start needing replacing. Its got the throttle body injection. It works but I dont think its the most efficient. I was also thinking maybe a carb set up might even be better milage wise than the throttle body set up. I just thinking about it now so when something really goes wrong I have a plan. Not even sure if a 4 cylinder swap would even be worth it but I seem to use a hell of a lot of gas and with gas prices so high it might be worth my time. Quote Selected

My Tbird/Cougars get much better mileage all around than my 2.3T Ranger does with the same gearing. It's the aerodynamic factor..the Ranger isn't and the 83 Tbird is fairly slippery. I've pulled down as good as 32mpg on the hwy (75-80mph). My 83 turbo 'bird is an ex 5.0 car. Quote Selected
