here up date on project casper!

hello every one.
so this place is called fox t-bird/cougar,  i  just had to join.:burnout:
 out of my foxbody collection ,i have two of them or one of each depends which way you look at. so let me tell you about them;

Subject one: it follow me home , i swear?
it looks like a 1982 cougar XR-7 needed a new home . I didn't plan it that way, it just follow the road to my house .
I went to look at this car for  PARTS. I needed the windshield because my 1982 merc zephyr (one cracked after install one). when I open the hood and found it was a factory V-8 car. I figure well the engine could be for the  1980 zephyr wagon too.
the owner , where this car was resting at.  told me, when  he got it from the person he bought from. on that drive home .  the rear main engine seal  started leaking on the exhaust. SO he wanted to fix the rear main seal leak .so he could drive. he unhook the exhaust Y-pipe  and the power steering rack from K member, drop the starter but he fingered he would do the rest later. that was in 1999? it sat in the same spot for 9 yrs?
I didn't know it was still on the car ramps until I went to  look under it.  the ramps only where sticking  out of the mud about 6 inches . so I figure if it was sitting that way, disable that long, then  it best to not use the tow-Dally as planed but to put on a car trailer .well mine is half loaded with se metal and  it wasn't ready to be unloaded. so guess i would have to call a friend. thanks to BOB tweety, I was able to get it home.
before bob got there. we had to move 2 parked cars blocking it way and  lot of junk around the cougar  to get a trailer close to it. after getting it home . I took a good look at it and from the spots of black spec of stuff all over the car and dirt from sitting. it look ok. so I spent 3 hours washing all the junk off from the out side/under side the car. I haven't clean the inside yet but it look good now.  as the photos show.  no, I haven't  put any wax on it yet! not sure I want to part it out know.

I think it wouldn't take much to get it drivable. heck even all the tires are holding air and not dry rotted. Casper still has the factory install 1982 serpentine belts on her. not to sure about how much HP the factory 4.2L/255 V-8  2bl carb had back then or what kind of gas mileage they got but it has overdrive tranny and soon maybe 3.55 rear  end.maybe a nice roller 5.0 too. boy, the mind starts to wonder already. I'm starting to think it would be a good  high way traveling car, now that I no longer have the 95 caprice with the LT-1  corvette 350.

funny thing , I only paid $50.00 bucks so far for  Casper but when I was checking the NADA webpage and they say low retail is $2130, average retail is $4800.00, high retail is $6450. man, no wonder the USED car lots all wise like that book.  the 1982 is one year only model too. the 80/81 had metal rear bumper and front header panel/  metal front bumper. 83 is the year they went to the aero style.

Subject two:;was my sons,now its mined again:D .
the other half of these is a  grey 1986turbo bird with red interior too. it also was a car i went to look for parts on t-bird back in late2002 ,early 2003.
it owner lived in  a city two hours away and let her son use it after collage to start his new job in my town. well the son was getting back from a of his trips home when it acted up. so son got himself a new car and told mom to come get it.
mom figured it was easier just to sell it, instead of towing it back home. when i arrived it had been sitting for couple of years in the back lot of  there friend warehouse. after looking at it and finding no rust and no body damage just the factory paint try to remove it self,i glady paid $300.00 for it and put it on the empty trailer i brought along just incase.
it was a mess after the teenager had it .so i clean it up and figured it might be to nice to part out.
then came along my son who said i like that car can i have it? hearing my 14 yr old son say that line for the first time shock my. so of course i told him ,if you keep your grades up and we can do a father/son project untill he tirns 16. so we change out all the fluids .surpise it started right up and idled ok.
we took it for test drive. well a block down the road, we knew we had problem. so back to the tharpy room we go. we find that #3 cylinder was dead and #1 was very low. so i happen to have a complete 1986 SVO turbo engine with the bigger turbo on it. son alittle up set but dads remind him no problem we can do it in a week end.so out with the old and in with the svo engine..
well along comes my former wife and  now thinks after 16 yrs  (not being around him more than a weeks at a time)! now she thinks she a better parent:flame:
after i get my son  back now 18. he liked my lincoln markVII LSC better. so he ask if i would trade him for the turbo bird. so i agreed. now with gas being up to $4.20 i don't think i did a bad thing:D ?
if you look at the last photo.i move it to the project row (it the 4th car to the left from my son) while it has to wait to get it back into tharpy room again.

Nice to see another Box Fox on the forum.

One thing though...all 80-82 XR-7's/Tbirds had the urethane bumper covers. No exposed metal bumpers on the 80-81's.

The '81-82 Cougars (the small ones on the Fairmont floorpan) had the metal bumpers.

The car looks to be in nice cosmetic shape though.

Mine is an '80.

(Also, you might verify that the windshields are even the same between the 80-82 XR-7's and the Zephyr.  I don't think they are.  The non-XR-7 Cougars ('81-82) are basically Fairmonts, but the 80-82 XR-7's are on the same platform (108" w/b) as the 80-82 Tbirds...and are not the same at all)

well ,we learn something new. every thing i find shows metal bumpers on the 80 and 81. do you have anything on these cars you care to  share? i hardly can find any facts about them. i know there not that high demand body:evilgrin:    but any thing would help.

The only Cougar in '80 was the XR-7 and it has the covered bumpers.  '81-82 XR-7's were the same except they did not have the little cosmetic grille extension under the bumper line.

The NON-XR-7 Cougars in '81-82 had the bare bumpers...

thanks for the info;
the zephyr/fairmonts have two style of windshields i found out the hard way.
1  is for the 2door  sadan.
1 is for the four door&wagons
they will not interchange. (don't know why ford would do some thing that dum but they did)
i have a new windshield sitting in my shop that i order in twice after i told them i had the 2 door .come to find out that the 2door is about 1inch wider of the last 2 inchs at the top of the glass on both side.
i took a tape messure of the glass in my 82cougar and the glass out of my  2door zephr. so far every thing messure up the same of the two. of course i can't find any one that still has the one for the 2 door. of course, the only way i will know for sure is to get a cougar replacement windshield and try i guess.
here is photo of my zepher. it the same style as the fairmont futura. which look to me, closely like the 1980 to 82 XR7 cougar and T-BIRD

so out with the old and in with the svo engine.

Am I the only one here who kind of gets a kick out of using an SVO motor in a Bird? (Instead of killing a Bird to save a Mustang?)

Oh, by the way, welcome!!

on the  tharapy floor is the factory 255V-8 & AOD tranny.  i installed a rear sway bar from 1998 cobra. plus installed a front  sway bar from a 1987turbo bird.
.

this is a new  long block 87 5.0 with rebuild AOD waiting for me to finish hooking everything up.

in front , is the replacement 8.8 rear missing the lower brackets.
next to it is the 7.5 rear i'm taking the lower brackets from for the 8.8.
on the floor is a 7.5 from 86 turbo-bird rear end to make sure the messurements are the some.

here the mess; there 3 engine and 3 rear end on this side of the bay.
just was updating you on my project casper.
