Wtf???

http://halifax.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-classic-cars-1984-MERCURY-COUGAR-LS-W0QQAdIdZ63684176

Nice '84 Cougar for sale locally. The guy wants all the money in the world for it, which is why it's been for sale for a long time. He's added something to his ad that caught my attention (highlighted in red below):

A fantastic driver, this completely original and correct beauty has been garaged since arriving from Seattle in 91. Built as part of a limited production run for electronic testing. (???) Drives and behaves as she did when new.  Ready to go anywhere with a 302 auto and all Lincoln options. Believe it is the only one like it in Canada.  Still have the original wheels, and all documentation.

I would write and ask what he means, but I don't want to let on that I'm even remotely interested at his asking price...

I smell :bs:

Why would a Mercury have Lincoln options?
Why would it be the only one like it in Canada?

And from the photo it is evident that the car is neither competely correct nor completely original.

Another person trying to make a 'cream puff' out of something it isn't...

You will note that I said that the car was for sale for a long time. The reason I posted it again is because of the "built as part of a limited run for electronic testing" part that the seller added. I even highlighted it in red after pointing out that I'd highlight the new part of the ad in red. So :raspberry

WTF was the electronic testing? What orifice did the seller pull that gem out of? And would knowing the car was originally a guinea pig really make the car worth more? Especially an early 80's electronics guinea pig? Imagine the glitches that car would have (if it were true)...

Ok, now I've gotta ask him...

Well, seeing as there was only one reply to that one I figured nobody had noticed it anyway. So I started a new one. So once again...:raspberry

I did write the guy. Here's what he wrote back:

Hey  Thundercat.  Thanks for your inquiry.  Here is the tale.  When I bought it in  Oak Harbor WA in 86 (2 yrs old) I was cleaning off the rotor button and  distributor contacts.  I thought it would be better to replace the rotor  button.  Couldn’t find such a creature to save my soul.  The guy at Hawleys Auto  Parts got as curious as I was when we couldn’t find one  .  Said leave it to me  for a couple of days.  Called me the next day and told me that a call was coming  in from Ford in Lansing MI in a couple of hours.  On the speaker phone we were  told that the electronics in the car were all the gear going into the 87 Lincoln  Continental and as yet were still not available but they would send one out.    As of 87  all parts became available.  When the car was three years old they  down loaded data from the computer and again when it was four.  At that time  they replaced the EGR valve and reprogrammed the computer (or replaced it)and I  have been driving it without problem ever since. (That’s only because it is only  out of the garage in the summer.  That, my friend is the story as I know it and  as it was told to me that day on the phone in Oak Harbor.    By the way where  does foxthundercats.com originate from??  Thanks for your interest.  Bruce
