Gas Tanks July 07, 2008, 12:24:09 AM The gas tank in my 83 is an odd shape, which won't allow me to run the passenger side tail pipe quite the way I want to. Do you guys know if I can just switch it out with a later tank, or even a Mustang tank? Has anyone else done this? Quote Selected
Gas Tanks Reply #1 – July 08, 2008, 09:59:29 AM I'm running mandral bent 2.5" tail pipes for a Fox Mustang and they fit around my gas tank fine. What are you running for tails? Quote Selected
Gas Tanks Reply #2 – July 08, 2008, 10:15:23 AM I have never seen a Mustang tank installed in a Cougar/T-Bird. I don't think it fits correctly. You have a 20.6 gallon tank; 1986-88 were 22.1 if you want to try that. Or the 1983-86 Turbo Coupes (and 1984-86 XR7s) had an 18.0 gallon tank. You're right, they are shaped differently but I have seen people run exhaust on the 20.6 gallon tank's passenger side with no problems. It can be done...just really carefully... Quote Selected
Gas Tanks Reply #3 – July 08, 2008, 02:22:11 PM Thanks for the responses. I have 5.0 tails on the car now and they are fine. What I really want to do though, is tuck my tails up in the quarter panels so they won't be seen and use simple turndowns. With the wierd tank on the '83, I can't get the passenger side tailpipe up high enough to disappear. Quote Selected
Gas Tanks Reply #4 – July 08, 2008, 02:30:48 PM That's what I figured...while they'll physically fit on the passenger side, tucking the pipes up is another story. There's more of a dimple in the tank on that side with the 22.1 gallon tank. That's probably more of what you'd need for what you want to do.What size is the tailpipe? 2.5"? Or less? Quote Selected
