HO, Where to start spending money

So I got this fine HO motor in my mustang and just like the rest of us, I as well am looking for a little more.
Its a stock mustang aside from a cold air kit, headers, pipes, and a smog and A/C delete. I was thinking pulleys and dipping into the intake would be a good place to start. Anyone with any suggestions?
I'd love to get my hands on some GT40 heads and intake but I'm gonna need to find a steal deal on some used explorer parts to go that route.
How big of a throttle body can I go? Would changing the intake manifold make a huge difference or is it not worth the money yet at this point.
Like I said, its a stock speed density motor. It sits in my 88 stang.

With the speed density, your somewhat limited. You can probly get away with an intake. The Cobra intake is a nice piece and should get you around 10-15hp typically.

Everybody that has the explorer parts to sell already knows what they got and ask the going price in gold accordingly. :mad:

With the TB on a mostly stock motor.. I'd say a 65mm is the biggest I'd go. On my 92', which was a 12.60 1/4 car.. I had a 65mm for reference.

The real issue is the cam. When swapping/upgrading a cam with speed density you must be sure to get one that keeps your vacuum high.

Heads? Intake? Pfffft. Take your pic as long as you match the combo correctly. Bigger injectors? How 'bout 36 pounders with a stock DA1 computer? It's been done. You just gotta pay attention to the little stuff and make absolute sure that an adjustable fuel pressure regulator is in the picture.

Yeh, I've read up on the cam situation, I know pretty much what there is to need to know, I'm just asking here for good measure. I wanna keep it to mainly bolt on performance this summer, I don't wanna really do any teardowns thats gonna leave my car not running for now.
Keeping a budget in mind as well =P Except for heads later down the road, I don't want to touch the long block this summer. I figured the fuel regulator would be in the equation at some point. Probably alongside the intake changes. Anyways, keep the ideas coming fellas.

FWIW the lower intake chokes up even stock E7's....It's the bottleneck in the intake tract.

I was just looking at the GT40 pieces on ebay and I'm a bit confused as to what the big differences are, whats with the EGR and the sensor near #5 on the lower? Whats gotta be done to make it work on my stocker and/or can't you just eliminate the EGR altogether or is that a bad idea? If I go drop a bid on something I don't wanna kick myself in the ass for buying the wrong part for my application

The sensor you're referring to in the cyl. #5 intake runner is the air charge temp sensor...you can either drill and tap the necessary hole for it(which is easy enough)...i think it's 9/16" NPT...i'll have to find my tap, I can't remember. A lot of people actually just relocate the ACT to the air box or inlet tube. You can run without an EGR...but there really isn't much benefit to it as your computer won't be the happiest thing in the world afterwords...some people even reported minor detonation after deleting their EGR valves...some have had no problems at all. Instead of spending all that money on a tubular GT-40 intake, you could save some big cash and pick up an explorer intake at a local junkyard...flows almost identically to the '93 Cobra. Specific year Explorer intakes to look for are 96-97 1/4...they will have the necessary EGR passages in the intake, instead of the later external EGR....which can be made to work...it's up to you.

I have an explorer upper and lower, all cleaned up and painted, and I can throw in the throttle body too, its a 65mm stock explorer one which can be moded to work in a fox.
I want 220 shipped.

Nice price on the explorer intake...good luck on the sale. I think I'm going to be cleaning mine up and painting it soon.

Drill and tap an Explorer lower for the ACT sensor. Putting the ACT sensor in the air box on a car that was designed to have the ACT sensor in the intake causes some funky issues....

And if your starting out with the motor out of the car, build the bottom half. you can throw everything else at it when its back in the car. Why yank one put one in and have to pull it because you spun a bearing?

I'll let you know about that intake soon, I got a bid going right now on a OEM Cobra upper, lower, and TB for just under that, but if I loose out I might just buy yours
