BPV - Help Needed!

Hello all,

The car is Salt. The problem is a leak from the brake proportioning valve itself.

Based on the location of the wet area and that gravity works, I tend to believe that it is that vavle adjuster thingie that is leaking. All the lines are just fine.

Okay, so no biggie... I take a trip to one of the local boneyards where they have one lone 87 Bird (picked to pieces at that). I extracted the BPV with no difficulty.

I get the piece back home and compare it to the old one, they're the same.

So after cleaning up the new old piece, and began to install it.
I got the lines in and started, the bolt and little hitch fit into the chassie just fine... so I start spinning the nut, and even before I get to begin tightening it, I break it. Grr     :shoothead

So, I have a BPV that leaks, a BPV with a broken mounting bolt....

Poor Pepper... I broke down and 'borrowed' her BPV... I got two out of four lines off, and had to cut the other two (no biggie, she's more of a parts car at this moment in time). Then, lol, I go to remove the mounting nut of the bolt, and I find the entire mount has separated from the BPV!!!

So now I have a BPV that leaks, a BPV with a broken mounting bolt and now a BPV with no mount what-so-ever! :screwy: Wow, all I need to do is touch Salt and I break something. I guess I have the touch of death?

Here are the three BPV's: In this order: Salt, the lone bird, and Pepper.

(Okay, so I photochopped Salt's original piece to illustrate what damage I did. This piece is actually still in Salt to keep the brake fluid from the master from spilling all over everywhere)

I've been searching this site and others for ideas, and the best ideas I've seen are to simply rebuild with a new 'creative' solution to completely elliminate this BPV, however... I'll consider doing that after I've exhausted all other possibilities... I mean heck, I've got three BPV's, I am sure I can get something going... but this is where I need a little help.

I understand that the mounting bolt is press-fitted into the mount. Is this correct? If so, what would be the best way to seperate the bolt and install a new one? All the lines on the car are fine.

I have no idea how the mount braket is actually mounted to the BPV. It looks like some kind of funky rivit. Even seeing it apart on Pepper didn't help. Is it possible to swap the mounts themselves?

I'm open to suggestions!

All the attachement for the mount is is a smashed down portion of that raised rect piece.  You could transfer the brackets between the two and just smash down the two ends that weren't previously smashed.

Alternatively you could just put the piece with the broken bolt in place and drill a small hole through the tower and bracket and just secure it with a self-tapping screw/bolt.

It's not THAT critical.

I wasn't too sure about that... I had thought about the self tapper idea. As much as I hate drilling a hole in my car, it tends to be successful.

I was primarly concerned that the self tapper I would install wouldn't be strong enough, I mean, the original mounts looked pretty big.

But you're suggesting, ChuckW, that it would be strong enough?

This is what I have so far:

When I drill the pilot hole, I'll use a 9/64 bit.

My only other question is where is the best spot on the BPV mount to drill?

It's probably right there.

I'll give this a go later on today.... thanks Chuck!

Well, I got the BPV in... I didn't tap it after all... I'll have pics of what I did soon...

Got ready to bleed the brakes... added some fluid to the MC...

Now!... the BPV from the lone bird is leaking. Only this time, it's out of the line. Only one line... it looks as if the housing threads have been stripped. Fortunatly it's one of the short lines that comes out of the MC to the BPV.

I'll know more when I go out to play with it again... after I get rid of some blue shiznit on X and fix up her alternator bolt again.

Until then!

No I won't. The BPV out of the loner bird has striped threads on one of the inlets for the upper break line. It leaks. Grr.

So, back to square one. Time for a brainstorming session. I now know I have three BPV's with two leaking and the one that doesn't leak, doesn't have a mount.

I tried to remove the mounting bracket off of Salt's BPV, but I just dunno how to get it off without breaking it. :wtf:

Then inspiration struck.... you see that little metal piece proping up the third valve? I was just tinkering with it, and realized I was on to something. That particular piece just wasn't big enough.

So, I pull out a box of some s sheet metal I had from the days redoing my gas tank mounts (you remember that one? :hick: )...

Cut, cleaned & painted:

I wrapped the strap around the BPV and rivited into place. Then I rivited the second metal piece into the first (after drilling the hole for the bolt).

I had a LOT of fun doing this. I dunno why, it just was a blast. I got pretty excited at how well this was working!

Here's a side by side comparison:

Wooo! Go me.

Now all that's left to do is cleanup the piece and install it. Within a couple of hours I'll be out there.

That WAS FUN. :)

Here's hoping Pepper's BPV fairs better!

Hahahahaha at me.

This has been incredibly annoying... but all I can do is laugh...:rollin:

Okay, so Salt was leaking.
The Lone bird was stripped.
Pepper ISN'T THE SAME!!!!

My beautiful mount.... is no longer. Had to take it off to look at the numbers after I couldn't get one of the lines into the unit.

Salt BPV: SURF 251-7 E7SC-2B091-AA
Loner BPV: SURF 232-6 E7SC-2B091-AA
Pepper BPV: SURF 177-7 E8SC-2B091-AB

Silly me, I didn't even think of looking at the numbers before I 'borrowed' Pepper's BPV. The line that runs to the rear is bigger on Pepper than on the others. My guess would be, it's the difference between the 9" vs 10" brakes? Salt has the 3.8EFI, while Pepper and the lone bird have the 5.0L's. So that's probably why I didn't think to double check the numbers, I figured it was the same. The only difference between Pepper and the Loner is a year and perhaps the loner has only 9" brakes.

So, now I have three BPV's. One leaks, one's stripped and one just won't fit. Okay.

It's time to do this job once and for all. Cougar B. I don't like using my cars that aren't on the road as parts cars, because ever part I take, I'll have to replace at some point anyway. But, Salt is a DD, and it's time she gets OUT OF MY GARAGE!

I managed to get all four lines out without cutting anything. I didn't break the mount either :) and I slid it into Salt without incident. No leaks. We bleed the brakes... no leaks. I WON. Thank-you Cougar B!

The next time I have to deal with this valve... it WILL be bypassed.

Cougar B hard at work.

Wow.

Oh and if anybody was wondering.... that simple solution that I never posted pics on, looked like this:

But I didn't like it, so perhaps it was all a blessing in disguise anyway.
