Random stalling problem after mass air swap

So this has got me a bit perturbed. The car runs great and doesn't stall when running but it does when started every once in awhile. The car will start fine cold or hot but that in between stage is a bit shakey. For instance when the car has been run for 5-10 minutes after being started cold and then shut off on restart it will fire go to a 900 rpm idle and then die. Then when restarted if I hold my foot on the gas for 5 seconds to keep the rpms at 1200 it'll be ok. No problems when it's running and the car runs great it's just this is starting to piss me off. I've checked for codes and all I get is a code 95 (the one for the fuel pump since I didn't run the wire). Could that cause it?

Nope.  I never ran that wire and I'm not about to.

Check your IAC valve. They stick open or closed sometimes. It's mounted on the throttlebody.

Hating to wait for the code to read, I connected mine... In the TC, I was able to use the original single feed to the pump as the return, since I now have a 5.0 FP harness...

But... The code can be eleminated by connecting the FP monitor(P 22 I believe) to any switched voltage source... For instance the EEC supply(relay)... It's basically a useless feature, will only give a code IF there is voltage loss to the pump(maybe wiring or the relay)... The EEC is still happy as a hog in slop when the pump dies(been there, have the Tee Shirt)...

If none of Paul's suggestions help, set the idle to 650-700 rpm in gear and forget about it(may need to reset TPS to less than 1v)... Prob be around a couple hundred RPMs higher out of gear... With the Stage-1 TFS cam, I keep mine at 950 in gear, with a loose torque converter, isn't a problem... With the additional idle, you may get a "unable to control idle speed" doing a KOER test...

I guess I could try bumping the idle a bit but I didn't think I would have too since the cam I'm using is pretty mild.

IAC is fine. It was working fine when the car was running SD about a month ago.

thunderjet302..what ecm are you running? Do you have an open element air filter? I'm running an A9P in my car with the factory air box and I've had similar issues to you, except mine would start missing randomly and just come out of it and run fine.  I found a vacuum leak, from a broken vacuum cap on the intake, replaced it and my car runs much better. So I would check for vacuum leaks and hook up a vacuum gauge if you can.

He found a FUBARed spark plug according to his track thread....I'm sure that wasn;t helping...

Replacing the #3 plug seemed to fix the problem. I'm suprised it was messed up as I'm running Autolite plugs, which are pretty much Motorcrafts with different stampings ;)

Thats good that fixed it my old car used to hate the cold but i got a ton of new parts for my old T-bird set-up to go into the XR7 so it should be fixed whatever it was but i turely hate idel probelms.

So I ran KOER codes again just for fun and got a code 12 about not being able to control idle upper limits (ie idle too low). So it might have a bad IAC. The IAC is 20 years old though so that might explain it. I think I'm going to try cleaning it and see if that helps. I also got a code 44 and 94 about the Thermactor system. I ignored those because all that stuff isn't on the car ;)
