unusual tire wear UPDATED

recently I have noticed some really strange, well strange to me tire wear on my rear tires.  It seems that the inside of the tire (from the middle in) on the drivers side more than the passenger tire is worn almost bald and the outer edges still have some tread.  could this be de to a worn axel bearing?  I am also hearing a pop during driving from the drivers side rear.

could be bearings,,,, check for play up / down / side to side / in and out.
Normally there is a very minor in and out gap i would guesstimate to be less than 1/8''.

but,,
measure the driver side like this.
measure from the 9 o'clock edge of your rear rim up to the 3 o'clock edge of your front rim.

repeat on pass side and compare.
We are checking for suspension parts that have shifted or are worn / mis-aligned.

the rear has CHE control arms so I dont think anything "should" have worn quite yet since they have only been in the car for about a year and a half.  there is some in out play on the drivers side (about 1/2 to 3/4 inch.  is this something that could be shimmed or is that the bearing wear that was mentioned?

Um... PARK THE CAR! I AM NOT KIDDING AROUND!

Sounds like the "C" clip is gone and the axle bearing is shot. Either the axle bearing wearing out did the clip in, or the clip failed and has caused bearing damage in the process. OR, your axle is broken. In either case, failure to fix will result in the axle coming completely out of the housing, potentially causing an accident with severe injury and/or death. Time to get gooey!

p.s.: make sure that you clean out the axle housing really good and that parts of the clip, etcetera, are not stuck in the differential unit. It would probably be good to replace the bearing and "C" clip (if the drivers side axle broke, replace the passenger side axle as well) on the other side while you are at it if you have the money. At the very least, make sure that the other axle gets a new "C" clip, even if the bearing is good.

Holy !!  where can I get new C clips??? I havent had the cover off of this rear end and I havent messed with a taction-loc rear before.  are they similar to a standard or am I going to have to mess with clutches?

The clips are readily available. They are known to break often in race applications which is why NHRA (and others) require "C-clip" eliminators in certain classes. They even break under normal use of the car if one is unlucky. Check your local ford dealer or C.J. Pony Parts, Jeggs, Sumitt Racing, etcetera. Other than the clutches, the differential is similar to non trac-loc/limited slip differentials. Remember to get the proper friction modifier additive too (added with the new gear lube).

You shouldn't have to mess with the clutches in the differential unless they are damaged. The differential can stay in the housing while all work is done (except for ring/pinion gear set, differential carrier bearings, clutches). If the differential also has to come out, I strongly recommend that you have a shop that specializes in axles and differentials do the work.

:D For me at least, I do take many things quite seriously, sort of like the problem discussed here. Maybe it sounds a bit overboard to some. However, when I react that way with my own vehicles, family and/or friends and it turns out to be not so bad, that is a god thing. It is also a good thing to find out it was indeed really bad and I just saved some one pain & suffering. I would rather be serious instead of dead (or both)!:D

well I finally got around to pulling the cover on my differential.  yeah I know I should of done it sooner than now...  here are some pics of what I found. the drivers side axel seems to have about a 1/4" of movement and the passenger side about 1/16th" to 1/8th" the pin doesnt seem to be worn and the C-clip groove doesnt seem abnormal and everything else seems tight. is there something else that I should check before I put the cover back on?

well since nobody has said anything, I am going to assume that this rear is junk and there is nothing I can do to save it.  I am thinking that the LH clutches are gone and this is what is causing my popping sound. also with the drivers side lifted and the passenger side on the ground I can turn the axel freely in both directions this is what is telling me that it is the clutches. correct me if I'm wrong please.

Put a new clutch kit in,its not that bad to do.
If you do,remember to heat the bolt that holds
the big pin in,you don't want to snap it off.

Have you taken it to an alignment shop?  Maybe your axle is just bent.
