20th Ann Interior March 09, 2005, 08:05:53 PM I'm trying to restore the interior of the 20th I just bought. My question is what is the material on our seats, I read on coolcats that it is ultrasuede, but mine is definitly cloth, and the upholstery shop confirmed this. Does anyone else have a cloth interior in their 20th or was mine reupholstered at some time? I find it hard to believe it was because all of the seats and door panels are the same, but who knows. Re: 20th Ann Interior Reply #1 – March 09, 2005, 08:46:14 PM OK, I need you to describe your interior...or better yet, post some photos if possible. Your seats should have the red piping between the perforated (suede) and solid (leather) sections. If you have no piping at all, it sounds like a pair of standard cloth buckets were swapped in. Their perforated pattern would perfectly match the door panels and rear interior panels. Quote Selected
Re: 20th Ann Interior Reply #2 – March 10, 2005, 06:52:08 AM I've got the leather sections in red piping so that is why I am confused. I'll post pics in a little while. Quote Selected
Re: 20th Ann Interior Reply #3 – March 10, 2005, 07:31:48 AM I know its hard to tell in the pics but the material in the middle of the seats is cloth. So do you guys think it was replaced at some point? Quote Selected
Re: 20th Ann Interior Reply #4 – March 10, 2005, 10:32:42 AM Had to have been replaced at some point if it really is cloth. As far as I know, all 20ths came with ultrasuede and it is impossible to find. I had a small tear in the back seat of my 20th and no upholstery shops could find that material at any of their suppliers. Quote Selected
Re: 20th Ann Interior Reply #5 – March 10, 2005, 10:52:38 AM I cannot tell for sure...in some ways it looks factory, but in other ways it looks replaced. One last thing I need, and then we can be more certain:On your driver's door tag I need you to find the interior color code. Ultrasuede is TY. If that's what's on your tag, then it was originally Ultrasuede and your seats were changed to cloth at some point. If your code is DY or KY then somehow it was ordered with cloth seats from the factory. My gut says it's replaced. Jim is right...finding original perforated suede is next to impossible at this point. I'm sure the last owner ran into that, and just said, "Aw screw it, put in cloth instead." But until we get that code it's a guessing game. Quote Selected
Re: 20th Ann Interior Reply #6 – March 10, 2005, 09:44:35 PM It is TY, so I guess they were originally ultrasuede. Whoever had the conversion done had to pay some big bucks being that they had everything redone including the door inserts and all. Now comes the problem of replacing all of this. As was stated earlier it is impossible to find the a matching ultrasuede, the closest I have found so far is just plain ultrasuede with no perferations. And I am told that ultrasuede can't be perferated because it is so thick. So I guess I have three options:1. Replace them with the cloth leather combo it currently has.2. Use the unperferated ultrasuede and leather combo.3. Use the original leather, and then put a darker perferated leather in place of the ultrasuede (which is what I am leaning towards)What is everybodies opinion? Quote Selected

Re: 20th Ann Interior Reply #8 – March 11, 2005, 11:52:29 AM I know it's not original, but I like how it is now. Looks good. :D Quote Selected
Re: 20th Ann Interior Reply #9 – March 11, 2005, 03:39:48 PM Before you do anything search high and low for a 20th anniversary that you can buy the interior out of.That is what I did. It took some luck and patience but I found an interior that was nearly mint in a car that had been in a front end collision umpteen years ago. It was just sitting there waiting on me. I got all of the seats (perfect condition), the original floormats (mint), the steering wheel (mine was cracking in the leather wrap), the ultrasuede door panels, the look switchpanels, and I even got the power seat tracks. All this cost me roughly $400.00.If I had gone with my gut reaction and not done some pretty deep searching I would have spent a fortune. I found this stuff through a guy who was selling the exterior emblems on e-bay. I just asked him what else he had for a 20th anniversary and he told me the car was at a local junkyard and he was just pulling parts. I gave him basically a shopping list and he came back w/ pictures of everything I wanted. After I got everything here I decided to have him pull a couple of other things off just for spare parts. He went to the junkyard and the car had been crushed. It sat there all those years with no interest whatsoever and once the interior was gutted they decided it was worthless and bye bye.I know I am lucky but you never know.My car on the interior looks exactly like the pictures in the brochure. It looks brand new. :D PeAcE Quote Selected
Re: 20th Ann Interior Reply #10 – March 11, 2005, 06:17:34 PM I stopped by the upholstery shop on my way home from work today. I did not find a specific Ultrasuede in the shop books for 1987. More than likely that material is long gone. And I'm sure that's why the previous owner went with the cloth, because even though the original cloth probably cannot be ordered, plenty of similar replacement materials exist in cloth. It's definitely not like that with suede or leather. The shop manager did give me info on a company that would be his absolute last resort. I didn't look them up on the web, but here's their static info:SMS Auto Fabrics2325 S.E. 10th AvenuePortland, OR 97214503-234-1175Fax 503-234-0651If--IF--the Ultrasuede still exists, this company would have it. And it would cost roughly $100 US or more per YARD. You'd need around 4 yards to do both seats, the headrests, the door panel inserts and the rear panel inserts. If it were me, I'd enjoy them as they are but start to hunt for original seats and panels from a donor car. At least this way, if you need a repair, you know it won't kill your pocketbook. Quote Selected
Re: 20th Ann Interior Reply #11 – March 11, 2005, 06:53:28 PM Yeah I might try to search for a while, my pictures don't show the flaws in the seats, whcih is why I am trying to get new upholstery. The passenger seat cloth is all ripped up and has been covered with patches and side leather is cracking on the drivers seat. I think I'm going to at least look for a while and then if nothing I'll redo the ones I have. By the way if I do reupholster them does anyone sell new foam for our seats, because mine is shot? If not then I will be searching the junkyard for that too. Quote Selected
Re: 20th Ann Interior Reply #12 – March 14, 2005, 10:41:16 AM The upholstery shop should be able to replace the foam for you when the re-cover the seats. Quote Selected
