ugly top

My 88 cougar ls has the blue fabric(?) top over the back half of the car, with a chrome trim around the edges. I'm getting some body rust in the immediate area and was wondering if I coud permanently remove it or if the roof was other than complete and required this top. On the same note if it would look ugly to permanently remove it, can it be temporarily removed to fix the rust?

Mine had a full cloth top when I got it. The roof underneath is a regular roof. But be prepared to fill a lot of little holes and remove lots of glue if you chose to remove it permantly. Whoever invented the cloth top should be beaten with a stick or at least hit with a brick. :brick:

The car is a Bostonian Edition which my grandfather said either is or will be a collectors car. Will removing the top decrease the value of it?

yes it will. no offense Tim. but honestly, i wouldnt count on it actually being worth anything unless its mint and has like, no miles on it. i could be wrong though. no i couldnt. i thought i was wrong once but then i realized i was mistaken...  :hick:

I have a 93 cougar Caliente edition, its "caymen green" with a tan ugly top- could i remove mine and the car be ok? and are you sure the top is painted body color? its a vinyl top, what would i go by to fill the holes also? and where could i find the same color paint, dealer only?

Unless you are fairly good with body work and painting I would not suggest removing the top yourself. Not only are there like 20 holes to fill you have to remove a lot of glue. The only way that I found to work is to se it off. Needless to say that is not good for the paint.

To fill the holes on mine I just used body filler. If you were to look at my roof you would never be able to tell it came with a full cloth top originally. To get the glue off I used a putty knife and then sanded the entire roof to get the remainder off. I'm sure there is an easier way to get the glue off but I don't know about it. And to answer your question, yes the roof is definatly painted body color. The paint under the vinyl will actually be in better shape then the rest of the car because it has never seen the sunlight. :giggle:
