I'd like to see a real lawyer challenge that in court. I honestly believe they'd have a hell of a good shot at throwing that law out. The whole "restricting inter-state commerce" and "taxation without representation" comes in. Kind of hard for NY to collect money on stuff manufactured in Idaho.

Not really surprised considering this states desire to push out hard working folks and business and support delinquints and other unsavory folks looking for there monthly hand outs. Maybe they need to raise some money for our former and or present governor, neither seems all that bright. Hell this is the state thinking illegal imigrants needed to get drivers licenses.  Like I needed another reason to dislike NY.

I hate to be a wet blanket, but everything bought from legitimate stores on the internet should have been taxed anyway.

Well, it's just as bad that they sent out over 90,000 letters to people who paid their state taxes, saying they couldn't prove they paid them and they want copies of ALL 2007 pay stubs, 2007 w-2, a letter from the company including a phone number for contacting someone and a copy of the SS card.

They claim a discrepancy between what was reported as paid and what was actually paid. So, great... we get to wait another few months for our return.

Luckily, Roger saves all of his pay stubs from each year so we have all of them... but how many people actually do that? I'm betting NY is hoping not many do, so they can refuse the refunds.

You're legally obligated in Alabama to pay a consumer use tax on any item purchased that didn't get taxed in the first place.

So if you buy a $100 widget at Amazon.com, you need to pay $4 (4%) in tax to Alabama because you bought it.
Explanation

I've never seen it enforced though.

No sales tax in NH - that applies to everything.

....and ISSUES THEM those licenses!  Yes, that started LONG before it was in the media's eye....

It's amazing how the "temporary visitor" status denoted on the license can expire in say 6 months, but the license will still be valid for YEARS after that.

The same applies here, but it's nicer to do it in one shot at the end of the year when you have a return coming.......It gets lopped off the return amount and it can work out to be MUCH cheaper because it can be based on gross adjusted income....The problem -- as far as the state is concerned -- is it's  near imposibleto enforceand most people do not know about it.

New York is ridiculous.....Check THIS out...

Additional local tax — You may owe an additional local tax if you are a resident of a locality (county or city) at the time of purchase and you:
• bring property into that locality which you purchased in another locality in New York State that has a lower tax rate;
• bring property into that locality on which you had a taxable service performed in another locality in New York State that has a lower tax rate; or
• bring a service (such as an information service) into that locality which you purchased in another locality in New York State that has a lower tax rate.
-- However, you are not required to pay any additional local tax on any property or service that you bring into a locality in New York State that you purchased outside that locality before you became a resident of that locality.

So every time I buy a 16 oz cup of coffee in the adjoining county to mine on my way home from work does that mean I owe my county of residence 1/4 of 1 cent?
