Hey guys, Ive been reading through this forum for a couple of months now and Ive read posts about pulling codes from our older cars. My question is how do you pull the codes. I've looked online and in autoshops but all I have found are readers for odb-II. And our cars predate that right? My service light comes on whn I start the car and goes out in 5-10mins depending on how aggressively I'm driving(the more aggressive the faster it goes out) Its been nagging me so whatever you can tell me in would be great.

I use an Actron Ford code scanner. You can get them at most autoparts stores. I got mine at Autozone for about $30 and it works great.

You can check the back of the packaging to make sure the scanner is compatable with your car. The plug in for the scanner is found under the hood on the drivers side by the strut tower. There are two connectors that plug into the scanner. The scanner comes with an instruction book and translation of codes.

If the service light you are talking about is the "S service" that is displayed under your speedometer, that is a service interval light. It is just a reminder and doen't mean that there is any problem with the car. It lights up on startup and I think it goes out after the first couple miles of driving. Click here to see the details from the cool cats website. Go to the details on the center module and that will tell you how to reset it. It works the same whether you have the full digital or base cluster.

close,, but not exaclty true.

that's "S" for Speedometer and indicates that either there is a problem with the speedo or its not the original one that came with the car.
Troubleshooting the Digital Speedo
Hold the Trip Reset button in
turn the ign switch to run
advance through the tests by pressing trip reset
a steady tone and a "P" on the display says it passed.
example
first display will have
54 in upper left and step number 1 in upper right, P in the center
here are the displays for a passing speedo

54 1 P
78 2 P
E4 3 P or F
nothing 4 P or F
nothing 5 P or F
nothing 6 P or F
nothing 7 P or F
1p 8 P or F

display test prove out is step 9

The "service engine" green light to the bottom of the speedo comes one as a service reminder.
to make it go out,, press trip set and trip reset at the same time.
