Cars like that have their place. Even poor people need to be able to get to their jobs. You just have to accept those cars for what they are. Does anyone remember the Chevy Chevette? A friend of mine had one -- we used to joke that they were made from the parts that were left over. VERY uncomfortable car, but it served its purpose -- something inexpensive for someone just starting out in life.

Me? I had a lemon-yellow '72 Gran Torino four-door. Much nicer car, but definitely a Granny's car (and it wasn't made with the best steel ever, so it really rusted).

I don't see how anyone can say this proves Toyota has a better warranty than the American automakers. Someone said if this happened to a Ford or Chevy, you'd be screwed. I guess it's easy to say that if it never happens. I could also say if it happened to Ford or Chevy, they'd give you a brand new truck because I'm pretty sure it's not going to happen either. Ford's been making trucks over 80 years and they're pretty good at it. I've never heard of a Ford truck FRAME rusting out in 10 years and forcing the truck to be junked. Do the fenders and boxes rust on Ford trucks? Yes. I am sorry to say they do, they rust almost as fast as fenders and boxes rust on puppiesanese trucks. The difference here is we're talking about the FRAME, the most important part of a truck. To have a frame rust completely out in less than 10 years tells me the problem is not lack of undercoating, it is either too thin or inferior steel or both. If someone dies due to a substandard frame, the lawsuits would be huge, so Toyota is not doing this to be nice guys. They're running scared because they built junk and got caught. So, as long as the corporate profits for Ford stay here in the US and as long as they don't rust out like imports, I will remain loyal to Ford. My $.02.

THATS one of the HUGE reasons. Theres cars made by american company's (parts from everywhere, assembled everywhere, blah blah, money goes to keep AMERICAN company's open.) Theres american cars that get the same mileage as the imports, most are built better, and some cost just as little. I hate how all the people CRUCIFY american companys when they have problems, but most recalls, and errors from import company's are not highlighted as much. I think its BS. But oh well.

MY point was, Toyota is blindly offering to buy back every single Tacoma from 95-00, regardless of mileage, condition, or what owner you are, for 1.5 times the KBB "Excellent" Retail Value!

Let me spell that out for you. I go out right now and buy a $500 95 Tacoma with 300K miles on it and a rotted frame. Monday morning I bring it the Toyota dealer, they say "yep, we have to buy it from you, here's a loaner car for 30 days". Then I get a check for $7500 (1.5 times the $5000 KBB Excellent Retail Value).

Rinse and repeat.

Try it 2 times i DOUBT they will do it twice...

only fords i see with rusted frames are farm trucks
down south I see TONS of rusted out chevys, but lots of fords with just rusted bodys. My buddys 96 f250, had BARELY ANY surface rust on it, no scale rust AT ALL, inside or outside. I have always said and will always say, Imports will run for ever, but they will fall apart much before then.

you dont get it. You might be dead right,but your still dead. You have fallen prey to the mindset of many americans who have been washed of thier loyalty and thier future as an industrialized nation. With the many people around now a days who think like you , i am certain our children will know nothing about our proud past or the greed that fueled outsourcing.

Americans who say,,"well its made in america" but ignores the revenue lost to another nation, need to look no further than thier own families and elders who remember a better infrastructure here at home. America and Canada are both in the same shape and I highly disagree with our direction.

Something like this would be documented, categorized and itemized. Just like a regular warantee. If your warantee is void at one dealership why would it be good at another?

we were not talking about warantees, we were discussing the fact toyota wants the trucks back ,, "to avoid law suits". Im sure if the same happened to domestics, there would be a huge effort to recall them all no matter the way they came in the door. Each and every one off the road decreases the liability of toyota.

according to the link you posted this is not entirely true, quoted from the article.

"Here’s how this will work: Starting in the middle of March and continuing over a period of time, owners of 1995-2000 Tacomas will be sent letters informing them about this issue. If you find rust perforation on your vehicle's frame, have your truck inspected by a Toyota dealer.

If frame corrosion damage is confirmed by an inspection at a Toyota dealership, at Toyota's option, we will either repair the vehicle or repurchase it. No matter the vehicle’s actual condition, it will be valued as a vehicle in excellent condition. If the inspection reveals no rust perforation, the 15-year warranty will remain in force.

This is worth underscoring: This is not a recall. Rather, it’s an example of our commitment to the durability of our products and to our owners. These are older trucks and rust is a fact of life, especially where road salt is used, but that’s not what’s important. What’s important is that we take care of our owners. they will only pay for the truck if the frame is rotting or already rotted, at thier own discretion at that. this isnt an oppertunity for some guy to c00ch up a $500 toyota and cash out on it unless the frame is already gone on it, which from what ive seen is easy to find around here but not guaranteed enough to bank on.

They are going to be keeping tabs on every single one and every transaction. Turning one in will not take 5 minutes. There is no such thing as a get rich quick scheme. Stop trying to find one here. If you stumble across 2really horrendous ones perhaps they will take them in. Minor surface rust will doubfully cut the mustard. Hell, according to the chart posted in the first post truck frames that are inspected and have perforation need "work with a Toyota representative to proceed further."
