Ya know that py, half-assed Focus redesign everyone's been complaining about?

...Well apparently it worked. Focus sales have been up each of the past several months. Maybe Ford actually does know something about small cars...

...nah, it's the customers that don't know anything. Either that or Sync really is something special...

There's a big demand for a fair priced car that get good MPG no matter what they look like.

But the big 3 keep on pushing big cars?

A good example is the new Challenger.  Don't get me wrong because they are a cool looking car.  But I think they would have a lot more sales for the same looking car in 3/4 scale.  Make it 3,000 pounds instead of 4,000 plus and offer it with a full range of engines.  The only engine for 2008 is the Hemi and you have to pay the gas hog tax.

The Mustang is way lighter and offered with a V-6 or 8 and you see a ton of them out there.  Most of them around here have the single tail pipe.

Let them come out with a good small car that has a turbo diesel and gets 50 plus MPG and see how many they sell.

VW already did - the TDI Jetta and Golf. They're not even really that small, but they get 45-50 MPG. I don't think they sold 'em in the USA because they don't meet US emission standards, but they are everywhere in Canada. Their popularity probably can be attributed to the fact that we are currently paying roughly $4.50/gallon for gasoline here, too (and that's the smaller 3.78 liter US gallon - gas is $1.19/liter here).

The Smart cars we've had available here were TDI as well, and got 60 MPG, but these engines don't meet US emissions standards either, and because the USA is a much larger market we Canadians will be losing our diesel versions as of 2008 MY. Not that it affects me - I wouldn't be caught dead in one. I'll take my 40 MPG Saturn and not look ridiculous, thankyouverymuch :hick:

20th: The new Focus IS py and half-assed. The so-called redesigned 2008 version is nothing more than a chromed up 2000 version. Take a look at the European Focus and tell me the US version isn't half-assed. Europe got an all-new Focus with a new chassis (based on a Volvo platform) with a nice range of engines including a diesel. North America gets a warmed over 8 year old car. I'm actually disappointed that the Focus is selling well - as much as I'd like to see Ford turn their fortunes around I'm sad to see them being rewarded for penny-pinching and giving US/Canada customers inferior products.

here in North MN, I see TDI Golfs and Jettas everyday.  A former coworker used one for his commute and got nearly 60mpg.  The downside is diesel costs more than gas right now.  I'm waiting for Dodge to do a retro mid 60's Dart, with fuel savings in the mix.  Even a lightweight 70 dart retro, would be cool, IMO.  (As I continue to drive my SC2 as well)

I am not going to argue it, its all in opinion, and i cant remember who it was but they claimed that ford jipped the jetta and the Ion so i hardly see how its a redesign of an 8 year old model.

It's quite simple: Ford took an eight year old Focus and put a new front and rear fascia on it with some slight sheet metal changes. Meanwhile Ford of Europe got an all-new Volvo-based Focus that is superior to the North American version in every aspect. It's not opinion, it's fact, easily verified (and often complained about) in any recent car magazine or on any car website such as Blue Oval News, Autoblog, etc. Even Ford admits that the current Focus is a stopgap until the new Fiesta bows in '10.

The "new" Focus is about as "new" as an '87 T-Bird was compared to an '86. The difference was that even though the '87 T-Bird wasn't really "new", it was still light years ahead of its full-frame , boxy competition (G-body GM's). That's not the case with the Focus, which is trumped by virtually every other car in its class.

In 2000 the Focus was a great car. It's still an OK car (it's not like it got worse over the years, though the loss of the SVT even while Dodge, Chevy, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Honda, and Subaru all brought performance versions of their shiboxes to the market was monumentally stupid), but the competition has far surpassed it. It's a classic case of Ford doing something right, then resting on its laurels and neglecting the car while the competition leapfrogs it, then a futile scramble to play catch-up while the competition laughs all the way to the bank. I think that's Ford's corporate motto.

Like I said: It's a shame people are falling for it, because it's showing Ford that lazy, half-assed design can work.

Similarly, it's a shame that the Contour/Cougar were such flops, because they were actually decent cars that could go toe-to-toe with anything the competition offered but went unappreciated by the public.
