February 25, 2008, 04:09:43 PM Subject: Car Taxes IncreaseVehicle License Fee Bill SB6900 is a bill that the Washington State Legislature is trying to pass in Olympia that, if successful, will directly add huge costs to our vehicle license fees. Everyone needs to know about so this situation so that you can contact your representatives and voice your objection.The bill is SB 6900 and it adds an "engine displacement" fee to the vehicle license tabs upon renewal. The fee has a varied amount depending on the size of the vehicle's engine:Engine Size (liters) Rate ScheduleUp to 1.9 $02.0 - 2.9 $703.0 - 3.9 $2254.0 - 4.9 $2755.0 - 5.9 $3256.0 - 7.9 $4008.0 or over $600For each car & truck that you own, calculate the rate by matching the engine size in liters to the dollar amount. Add the amounts for each vehicle and you'll see that the average two car familywill be paying $500+ every year in "displacement fees" on top of the normal license fees. If you have three vehicles, you'll be paying even more. The average family is already struggling with the high cost of gasoline, electricity, food and everything else, and our lawmakers want us to pay more, thinking we have unlimited deep pockets. This will do great damage to the budgets of retirees on fixed incomes as well. Now is the time to be very vocal against this bill. I have contacted all of our Representatives, and I would encourage everyone reading this to do the same. I'm no environmentalist (my T-Bird is sans cats), but I do know that oil is a finite resource that is increasingly harder to get, partially because we're using up the accessible stuff, and partly because we buy it from banana republic nut cases.Maybe not every year, but there should be a tax on large engines when the car is bought new. Actually it shouldn't be based on the engine, it should be based on the car's MPG rating, and it should be substantial. Not the silly "gas guzzler tax" that has such a low threshold it's useless, but a tax that applies to cars that, say, can't come within 20% of the upcoming CAFE standards. The only way to combat $4/gallon gasoline is to burn less, and it seems that people are unwilling to do this on their own, so they should be encouraged by smacking their pocket books around a bit. Naturally such a tax would have to be tweaked, such as exemptions for trucks registered for commercial businesses, etc.It's foolish to establish a CAFE standard without providing the buying public with incentives to buy more efficient vehicles rather than making the manufacturers build cars nobody wants. If the government made these cars more desirable by making 'em cheaper (by making fuel pigs more expensive) the manufacturers would have less to bitch about.Most of Europe has taxes based on engine displacement (and type - diesels get a break), plus they have astronomical fuel taxes (which is an indirect way of taxing inefficient vehicles - burn more fuel, pay more tax), and look at their fleet average fuel economy compared to ours. Think it kills "fun" cars? You need only look at the cars Europe gets that we don't to see that's false.Canada has just introduced a tax of up to $2000 based on fuel economy ratings, and actually offers a rebate of up to $2000 for vehicles classified as efficient. The tax on the fuel pigs pays the rebates (and then some). And amazingly enough, it was a Conservative government (our equivalent to your Republicans) that came up with the program. If it ever happened where I live, I'd be screwed. $400 to plow my driveway every year. $275 for me to drive back and forth to work every winter. X2 for the wife. Plus $70 for my Saturn in the summer. Not to mention another $2000 just in my other trucks and cars parked here, since they have to be registered due to the county ordinance. I would need 3 jobs.BTW, one fella on the FTE site contacted the reps from WA, and it was shot down at the committee level....which after Fall elections, it may come back to try again. I was there for that, I even signed the petition. I guess the liberal legislature finally found a way around the will of the people. They include boats as well. When does it end? Bicycles? A registration fee to use it legally on the road is one thing, but I paid my taxes on it when I made the purchase. My property taxes are quite enough, thanks. Besides gasoline has taxes built in already. The road tolls up here -- in NYC in particular -- are ridiculous. $9.00 to cross a friggin bridge...
