What Cam to use??

Any one able to tell me which cam will give best overall performance? I am looking for sound and additional power at start through mid range and if posssible more power over all. The cams I am looking at are, the E303 and the Comp Extreme cam (Summit racing #cca35-349-8). Lift for E303 is .498 and the comp is .512 lobe seperation is 110 for the E303 and 114 for the comp. I do not know what more info would be needed to compare so if you need more info let me know. Thanks all

1st off i wanted a Steeda cam #18 because the e303 cams bottom end kind of suck only 480 lift but would be a nice DD cam and also is said to work well with power adders.

2nd a Trickflow stage 1 cam .499 lift and i am 100% sure its better than a E303 cam anyday.

3rd what i got not bad but i don't like it all the times a used e303 cam and had it in my car for about 20,000 miles for $80 its done its job but next time i am not getting one in any ford car i own unless i buy someones project car.

Duration @.050" is an impoartant factor as is advertised duration.  ICL, ECL, and LSA are important as well.

Old stuff is not bad unless you mix it with new stuff unless someone hands you for FREE a E303 cam or a Ford F cam do not use it in the Combo.

Great link on the camshaft info.

Cam selection based on how it sounds may be the weakest criteria I've "heard"...

If sound is important, an E-303 can sound impressive.

Go to SBFTECH.com in the Grassroots section if you want input on a camshaft.  You will need to list considerably more information on your combination (heads, intake, F/I or Carb, trans, gear, weight, D/D, speed density/mass air, ect), before anyone will offer an opinion.

That site can be great resource.

depends alot on

where you'll be driving and how hard you'll drive it
(i.e. dragstrip running 14's? 13's? just cruise around town)
what trans you have
what gears you have
what stall converter
and tire diameter
and emmisions
those are some of the basic factors you need to include.

and from everything i've heard alphebet cams arent the greatest. but i have no experience using them.

Basiclly a show off ride(run around town and highway). Keeping factory trans for now. Doing mass air upgrade w/19# injectors. Keeping factory rear end and no emmisions are left on car. Putting 16 inch T/C rims on it. Staying with E6 heads until I can get a set of E7's. That is all I can think of for now.

Sounds like a good candidate for a H/O conversion (cam, intake and heads).  Huge increase over stock.  It will work well with the stock drivetrain, plus the stuff is cheap & plentiful.  A full dual exhaust  completes the picture.  Go with more cam on the next engine (believe me, there's always a "next" engine).

Do your pistons have valve reliefs? I ask because that matters... A lot! With the stock valve springs on your E6's you can forget about ANY Comp XE series cam. The ramp rates are too steep. Your stock springs won’t control the valves and they'll float... which is bad. Since you are staying EFI I think you want to shop for no less than 112* LSA. As a rule of thumb wider the lobe spacing the smoother the idle will be. EFI likes vacuum and anything less than 112* can cause the rolling/stumbling/stalling problems the 110* E cam seems to be famous for.

But, since you're using a stock converter with a stock AOD I think you'll be faster with a stock HO cam or maybe the "baby" Crower 15510 or 15511. You would probably need new springs to run the Crowers though.

Thanks for input. The cam in mind did say new springs so that is what I was planning. I am just so confused on what to get. Car has true dual exhaust with no catalytic convertors. Was also wanting to get new E7 heads but have had not found cheap enough to get them to me.

I bought a cam without doing alot of research.  Next thing you know I NEEDED new springs and roller rockers.  Do your homework.  Find out what others are using and what works with your setup.  Also look into rollor rockers.  Don't cheap out, a good set will cost close to $300.

You do have a roller motor correct?
