"10 Dream Cars" Twist

We started talking about this on another forum. Everybody has done up some multi-million "Top 10" garage thread, but they all start sounding the same (muscle cars, exotics, etc). We started debating over what could be more interesting (the whole Top 10 for $100K, Top 10 race cars, Top 10 Manufacturer's you'd like to see come back, etc). The one we really hit on was Top 10 engines.

Think about it, for most cars the big draw is the powerplant. If you could have any 10 car engines in the world in your garage to tinker with, what would they be? (Granted I'd love to do plane engines as well :hick: )

Me?

1. Mazda Renesis Rotary (the RX8 one)
2. LS7 with the dry sump (C6 Z06)
3. 5.4 DOHC/SC (from the Ford GT)
4. Falcon 4.0 I6 Turbo (Ozzie FPV version)
5. Ferrari V12 (probably the 575M Maranello version)
6. Any Dusenburg engine
7. Formula 1 V8 Turbo engine
8. Modern F1 V10 (pneumatic valvetrain, no cams/rockers!)
9. Hayabusa 1.3L
10. Modern 500ci Pro Stock engine

I'd just love to take any of those apart and see what makes them tick!

I want one of these:

Custome made for the president of Packard himself in 1929. He passed away shortly thereafter, however, and sure enough it was DESTROYED!!! :(  (Un)Fortunately the pictures and information regarding it still remain. Be sure to count the spark plugs! ;)

I'm really amazed by the smoothness of my Buick's straight EIGHT, I can't imagine running that bad boy right there. Probably forget its running and grind my starter gear! :giggle:
1987 20th Anniversary Cougar, 302 "5.0" GT-40 heads (F3ZE '93 Cobra) and TMoss Ported H.O. intake, H.O. camshaft
2.5" Duals, no cats, Flowmaster 40s, Richmond 3.73s w/ Trac-Lok, maxed out Baumann shift kit, 3000 RPM Dirty Dog non-lock TC
Aside from the Mustang crinkle headers, still looks like it's only 150 HP...

1988 Black XR7 Procharger P600B intercooled, Edelbrock Performer non-RPM heads, GT40 intake AOD, 13 PSI @5000 RPM. 93 octane

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

This would be a toughie. I'd have to say:

1) The new GM Duramax 4.5 diesel - that engine is just so ed cool, and innovative. Designed to fit into the same space as an LSx engine (making it a perfect Fox swap candidate), it has the exhaust manifolds cast into the head IN THE "V" and the intake manifolds cast into the heads OUTSIDE THE "V" - in other words it is the opposite of just about every V-engine on the market. I could SO see myself dropping one of these into a Fox Birdcat... 300+ horses, 500+ lb-ft, 35+ MPG...

2) 427 Cammer - I've always wanted one. 'Nuff said.

3) Boss 429-based Monster Motor - I seem to remember back in the mid 90's Ford did one up that was upwards of 600 cubic inches. I want it.

4) LS9 6.2-liter supercharged Chevy. ~620 horses and as docile as a Malibu for day-to-day driving. Keep the Corvette, but gimme that engine for my T-Bird.

5) 5.4 DOHC supercharged Ford GT engine. I'd take it in lieu of the Vette engine above, and can be made just as (if not more) powerful with a simple pulley change, but it's heavier and won't fit as neatly into the 'Bird as the Chevy small block would. Still, I'd make it fit if I had to...

6) Any Ferarri V8 engine. I do not like Ferraris, but there is no sound on earth like a screaming flat-crank Ferarri V8. If you've ever heard one in person you'll know what I mean.

7) 425ci Buick "Nailhead". I just like the way the valves are set up in these. Not the most powerful engine ever made, but one of the coolest looking...

8) Any large steam engine, such as an antique locomotive. Mechanical art.

9) Buick 231ci V6 Turbo. Preferably mounted in a Vega wagon.

10) Bugatti W16 quad-turbo. This engine is beautiful and very sophisticated. One crankshaft, four cylinder banks, 16 cylinders, four turbochargers. The fact that it belts out over 1000 horses is just icing on the cake.

Great list Carm! The new Chevy Diesel might have to bump one of mine as well...

That Boss 429 based monster motor came in "500" (496) and "600" sizes (for NHRA/IHRA Pro Stock categories). I've seen the heads, and holy cow! The Pro Stock TBird models come with that engine...

As for the nailhead, don't forget the 401 was the "original" HiPo version (Called the "Wildcat 445" for it's 445 Ft/Lbs of torque). Neighbor's 59 Buick Electra has one, very cool looking engine. In fact, we're doing a cosmetic restoration to it soon (the rebuilders from a decade ago painted it Pontiac Blue metallic instead of Buick Turquoise).
